But I do think it's worth noting that there's a whole generation of students who witnessed that and thought, "oh no, maybe industry won't ever accept me or my work," and they're still thinking about it to this day---that's sad, and I hope things get better for those students

It's been a rough couple news days if you care about the social impact of tech.😞 I've pulled together a couple articles below, but to summarize: AI applications are genuinely hurting people, companies are profiting off it & we have increasing evidence self regulation is a myth.

Nine months ago, I learned that Facebook has a Responsible AI team, and has had some form of it since Cambridge Analytica. I began to wonder: what has it been doing these past three years? Nearly four-dozen interviews later, here's what I found. technologyreview.com/2021/03…

This is important to everyone who cares about the US election. This is @LauraEdelson2 of NYU who Facebook has taken legal action against. Here she explains why she’s so worried about the ads she’s seeing & lays out how she fears they could be used to subvert the election

This came up in my conversation with @alexhanna so saying it here. If you're writing papers about marginalized people and exploitation and such and ascending because of it but you're not willing to risk a single thing for fear of loosing your privilege you're exploiting people

I have PhD students who do mostly qualitative work related to tech ethics. (GREAT students!) Ummm where should I suggest they look for internships? I am slightly clueless about the internship landscape. (Feel free to RT if you have the same Q, maybe we can crowdsource help!)

I think what's striking about this is how much of the time facial analysis tech is embedded in products that you think it's not, and how those deployments don't just enhance racism, but they provide brand new vectors of racism that you can't even dream up.
