Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games.
You've got my support 💖
I’m referring to local assistive tech in specialized domains vs. cloud-based wholesale generation for posers like you; the subtext applies to all usages, including my medium. I’d tell you to learn to read but you’d probably try to have Claude do that for you too

THIS is why preserving music video archives matters. Mariah Carey’s “Loverboy (Remix)” was shot on 35mm film back in 2001, and this new 4K restoration was reconstructed shot by shot from the original film elements. David LaChapelle’s colorful visuals still look incredible 25 years later.
1. legal doesn't mean ethical/moral
2. unless you're completely opting out of digital life (virtually impossible for most) equating hardware ownership to unnecessary software usage is disingenuous
3. you and I both know the vast majority of genAI training was/is nonconsensual

"Ethically sourced training data"
You're using a phone that is undoubtedly the product of child labor in Africa, but for some reason, training (ruled fair use countless times btw) data must be "ethically sourced" (whatever the fuck that means) for AI to be "useful".
the problem isn't AI/machine learning as a technology - IF the method were applied to proper problem-spaces WITH ethically-sourced training data AND supplied with ecologically responsible resources the tech itself is useful
the problem is almost none of that is the case
Can I be honest for a sec?
Regarding LLMs in gaming, I feel more confused than ever. And I would like my peers and other people who are familiar in this field to chime in.
It’s barely been a week since I made my post about distancing myself from a vibe coded project made by my friend in Smash. I even said “AI has no place in gaming”.
After I made that post, I was reached out to by multiple colleagues in the space and people hired full time in software development. They educated me severely on the topic and I feel dumb now for my earlier sentiments.
I was informed by my colleagues that it is now the norm to do 90% (and this is low estimate apparently) of all your coding with AI assistance or vibe coding. 75% of all new code at Google is made by AI and engineer approved.
The vast majority of all the apps we use now are updated or maintained with AI coding - I imagine that also goes for Twitter, the very app you’re reading this on.
So I figured okay - it’s here to stay in all software development - but where does that leave video games?
I saw the posts from Epic Games, XBOX, and other publishers that seem to embrace the new era instead of rejecting it.
In the last week I’ve been sent about a dozen different projects like this one that dissect and reintegrate Melee in multitudes of creative ways.
One of them is even a build of Melee that runs natively at 120FPS and one of them simulates the feeling of a CRT almost perfectly.
Some of them feel silly and useless, like low effort projects someone probably gave a single prompt and an ISO of Melee to build. Actual slop.
And yet some feel like legitimately useful things that the community or people practicing could benefit from.
I’m doing my best to navigate what is clearly a rapidly changing sector, especially when we regard the question of “Are Video Games Art?”
And since they clearly are art, does that render AI in its development a bastardized amalgamation of what’s been “learned” from people with actual original ideas?
Or is it strictly optimal to use AI in game development because games ARE software and therefore a necessary tool to wield in this day and age?
I am making this post because I need more guidance on this topic and I feel open discussion on it might be the best way to do that.

We're all born left wing.
Ask any kid if homeless people should be fed and housed, if everyone deserves healthcare, if bombing families is wrong, if racism is bad, if air and water should be clean, if trees and nature are good...

more plainly: your goats are aging out at best, washed or dead at worst. the youth of today deserve the same inspiration you did at their age. if that means something to you it’s our turn to step up - what are YOU gonna do about it?
he's 100% right. endless sequels, "spiritual successors", AAA third-person shooter with special-vision mechanic frankensteins, and nostalgia-bait are where actually novel design goes to die nintendolife.com/news/2026/0…

idk if something switched in my brain or im just getting older, but people being negative about shit all the time is so exhausting. like making fun of relatively harmless stuff and tearing it apart makes you exhausting to be around

You ever noticed that it’s socially acceptable to tell poor people how to spend their money? But when we ask the rich to stop hoarding wealth, the response is always “it’s their money.”

Might be one of the best clips to encapsulate the problems with current game discourse
Too many people don’t give articulate personal thoughts on games and just default to buzzwords like “slop” or “soulless” and call it a day. Folks gotta learn to elaborate
when the worst guy you know makes a great point
Konami president Hayakawa believes AI “won’t bring a significant change” to the game market. “Humans” and “creators” are crucial for developing innovative games

that's exactly what makes him the guy to say it - he made his contributions 20 years ago and we're still stuck cannibalizing that era. why should we look to the previous generation to advance the medium?

Not really the best guy to be saying this when he's known for running a franchise whose biggest achievement is waiting for the sequel, and whose latest title is a sequel to a 20 year old game.
