One of my mentors used to say legal practice is 70% strategy, 30% law and events I witness daily in Nigeria keep proving him right. I have sat to imagine that ADC leadership took the advice of the neophytes that wanted the party to abandon its further appeal to the SC over the order of status quo and chose to pursue the case before Hon Justice Lifu. It means INEC interpretation of the status quo would be in force TILL NOW and these are the possible scenarios: 1. You are at the mercy of Nafiu Bala. He can decide to delay the case till forever and the party will be stuck. Zero movement. 2. The party wouldn’t be able to conduct primaries. Even if they do, INEC won’t accept submission of candidates from them. Prof Amupitan will simply tell you to pursue your case up to the Supreme Court and get a favourable ruling to alter the status quo. 3. By today, the party will have no candidates. The momentum that’s already scaring the other party will be difficult to build in that chaotic state. 4. Eventually, Justice Lifu would have still given this decision of yesterday and you’d be struggling to set it aside on appeal while election approaches. BUT, now that the Supreme Court has clarified that status quo is the situation pre-Nafiu Bala case, primaries were conducted, candidates emerged, campaigns commenced. The party hardly suffered any serious setback from the anticipated judgement of yesterday. INEC typically does not act on a judgment of a trial court until the appeal is exhausted. ADC has (even without getting CTC of his judgment) appealed the Justice Lifu decisions today. Filed a motion for stay of execution. Compiling records of appeal. The party still functions as normal, today. Hon. Justice Lifu’s judgment, notwithstanding.

Fathers, please counsel your sons never to go to a girl’s parents’ home unless they have received an explicit invitation. Young men sometimes take risks without fully considering the consequences, and in certain situations those risks can become deadly.
