Posting this again to fix typo:
Morning stabbing turned officer-involved shooting. The police chief said the suspect (shot) & 2 of 3 stabbed are in the hospital. One died.
What makes me the maddest—3 kids were in the home at the time.

"The drop in U.S. gas availability so far this week was the most in over a year, with supplies on track to fall by around 9.6 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) from Jan. 8-14 to an estimated 11-month low of 98.6 bcfd on Jan. 14, according to data from financial firm LSEG."

It's gonna be cold in Texas, y'all. Qs on my mind:
1) will the natgas system freeze up (like in 2021, 2022, 2023,...)
2) will it be wet (probably not)
3) will it be windy (probably)
4) will peak electric demand in ERCOT >> summer peak b/c of heating + data centers (maybe!)
This is a good reason to keep an eye on the electricity supply and demand forecast.
Jan. 10 projections vs Jan 12. projections.
As the weather forecast changes, so does this.

"The natural gas market operates on a combination of non-transparent over-the-counter (OTC) trades and exchange-based standardized contracts in a handful of locations. And the gas markets that are transparent don’t do weekends." #txlege #energytwitter

Happening now:
ERCOT has issued a Weather Watch from January 15–17 due to forecasted extreme cold weather across the ERCOT region, higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves. This is @ERCOT_ISO forecasted electricity supply and demand for next week. More than 101,000 megawatts available is a lot considering our record peak demand was set this summer at 85,508 MW.
More context: expected power supply is if there are no unplanned/forced outages for power plants or other generators.
"Total (generation) outages during Elliott (Dec. 2022) peaked at close to 20,000 MW," shows ERCOT's Winter Storm Elliott Public Report.

The coldest air so far of the season moves into Central Texas for Sunday and early next week. This cold snap will be reminiscent of the cold snap of December 2022, and will bring multiple hard freezes.
The exact arrival time of the arctic front is still a little up in the air. The cold air could arrive by Sunday morning at the earliest, or Sunday evening at the latest. The more likely scenario is the cold air arrives earlier and much of Sunday afternoon is in the 30s and 40s. The arrival time will make a big difference in the weather for Sunday afternoon, but regardless we expect the coldest weather to be Monday and Tuesday.
By Monday morning air temperatures will likely be in the mid teens to low 20s for all of Central Texas. Wind chill values could be in the single digits or even below zero.
Temperatures Monday afternoon are now likely to stay below freezing, and then we drop into another hard freeze for Tuesday morning as temperatures drop into the low to mid teens area-wide.
Tuesday afternoon will be very cold, but will likely warm above freezing. The weather will be much warmer by the middle of next week.
The odds of ice or snow continue to look low for Central Texas. It’s not out of the question that there could be some light freezing rain Sunday night or Monday, but models are trending away from this idea. At this point we are not very concerned about wintry precip, but we will watch closely in case anything changes.
The main story will be the cold! This will be the type of cold that can burst pipes! So at this stage it’s a good idea to start thinking through your hard freeze preps to protects people, pipes, pets, and plants. #kvue #atxwx
In the @ERCOT_ISO meeting, CEO Pablo Vegas said both our grid has an increased risk of outages AND they are as ready as ever to deal with challenges.
“Both of those facts are true, and sometimes they can seem at odds with each other.”
@KVUE
He cites better readiness is due in part to the evolving supply chain map, continued growth on grid and emergency management training.
Vegas also said they are ahead of schedule on winter inspections.
Chris Coleman, @ERCOT_ISO lead meteorologist, says we are set up to have a hot winter… but he stresses we can still have severe cold snaps.
He said the winter season is more volatile than summer.
