Two fantastic, opposite ends of the Nebbiolo spectrum and a really special Pinot from a single block in Drum Canyon.
Deep red fruit, more density than most Langhe Nebbiolos and a bit more to chew on than usual. The slightly rounder palate and integrated tannins gave it a feeling of completeness despite its youthful energy and freshness. This is Langhe Nebbiolo with fun and crushable intensity.
Each one of these wines surprised us in some way with its arc over the course of the evening. One of the best and most interesting lineups in a long time!
…and breathe. Giving this a few hours to enjoy after dinner in what’s shaping up to be a pretty cool lineup. Based on how it’s drinking right out of the bottle, I’m more than a little excited!
The 2023 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly occupies that rare space in the Venn diagram where being an absolute crowd pleaser, being crushable, pairing well with almost any food and satisfying full on wine nerds all overlap. Never disappoints!

A year and a half ago this wine was in a completely dead phase as if someone had turned the volume down to almost zero. Last night, after a 3 hour decant it was fully expressive and absolutely fantastic! It’s one of Nebbiolo’s (many) quirks but it’s worth the patience.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Nebbiolo is that it’s heavy and full bodied.
Sure it can have powerful tannins but despite its structure, it’s often delicate, nuanced and nearly weightless.
This bottle paired beautifully with bright citrus and fennel salad.

Despite the vintage known for structure and longevity, after 45 min in the decanter it was already fresh, expressive and beautifully balanced. Ripe fruit sits comfortably alongside notes of resin and cedar, and fine tannins provide grip without ever becoming harsh.

2021 Alpha Estate ‘Ecosystem’ Single Block Reserve Xinomavro
I first discovered this wine at Meteora and immediately went on the hunt for more the next day. It’s been a staple ever since.
It’s like a cool site Barbaresco and Burgundy had a Greek cousin made from 100 y/o vines.
Because the grapes come from 50 co-op growers from all over Barbaresco DOCG and the house style is so transparent, Produttori del Barbaresco wines offer an incredible window into the character of each growing season itself.
They tell the story of Barbaresco, vintage by vintage.

Savory, structured, complex and serious, this is Barbaresco for people who love Barbaresco. It’s currently transitioning out of its youthful phase with tertiary notes starting to emerge. This is going to be fantastic in 5 years! #barbaresco #nebbiolo
