Why does it have to be one or the other? Both at the same time needed.

We had 10 fantastic talks in our symposium with @rachelkosborn @JGEntiminae at the Entomological Collections Network Annual Meeting. Each presenter explored new ways to connect communities with entomology. Thanks to everyone who joined and shared their work. #Entomology #Outreach

Yes I started an @inaturalist project at the @COREBorneo Tuanan orangutan research station in indonesia. It has been so great to gather observations in a place where collections are difficult bc humidity (90%), temp, & electricity.
Our 2nd symposium of the day is all about iNaturalist… “a mutually beneficial tool or a plaything for amateurs?”
So we’re interested to hear from you on this. If you’re a collection manager or a researcher or student working closely with a collection, do you use iNat?

Curious how digitisation helps unlock collections data? Check out this recent paper written by museum scientists (and lots of digitisers in particular 😉).

We have two main workflows, slide imaging and pinned insect. We use a Canon EOS camera with 90 or 100mm lenses, and lightboxes and imaging trays are made on site. We take a full shot of barcodes, specimen, and labels before cropping out all barcodes except the Unique Identifier.

We often get asked about the camera equipment we use, so we thought we'd show you the set-up vs the shot through a 2-part series.

It’s Día de los Muertos! Every year, southbound monarch butterflies arrive in Mexico for the holiday 🦋. Therefore, they're cherished, said to represent the souls of ancestors. Sadly, monarch populations are declining. iDigBio has >4,600 digitized monarch specimens for research.

It’s #OpenAccessWeek! At the Natural History Museum we have an ‘open by default’ approach to data, and our collections have already been used in nearly 4,000 research publications.
