I'm looking forward to my first term as a freelance writer and supporting schools.
If you think I could be of any help, do get in touch.

Continuing to explore research on supporting pupils who struggle with writing - this time, looking at how to support pupils who write like they are speaking.
Is better oracy the answer or more grammar instruction? What can a teacher do?

The bit about "and" is what I'll keep: it says two things happened, not that one caused the other. The waterfall answer has the knowledge and none of the causation. Splitting a pupil's own run-on into lines and asking which causes which makes that easy to see.

Our recent ITAP with SCITT trainees focused on questioning in geography- allowing us to deep-dive into how and why questioning in geography is not just a pedagogical tool but also a critical aspect of disciplinary knowledge to model.

Feels a bit weird to have all my predictions about instructional coaching at scale confirmed by a strong study (it didn’t work)
Cautionary tale!
Instructional coaching is usually seen as a safe bet for school improvement. But a recent EEPA study of a $20M/year coaching rollout across 130 schools paints a very different picture. Despite spending about $5,800 per teacher on the program, the district saw:
Zero improvement in teacher retention.
Flat ELA scores.
Math scores that actually leaned negative.
It turns out that the logistics of scaling killed the impact.
First, the district simply ran out of top-tier talent. To fill all the open roles, they had to start drafting average teachers as coaches.
Second, pulling their best teachers out of classrooms for half the day hurt students more than the peer coaching helped.
Finally, 80% of coaches were eventually tasked with summative evaluations, destroying the trust and vulnerability required for actual instructional growth.
It’s a great reminder that structural changes don't automatically improve the instructional core.

Continuing to look at supporting writing and asking the question - to what extent does a problem with writing come down to spelling or handwriting, and should we just let pupils type?
As ever, the answer is more complex than you’d think…

The second waterfall conversation is the one that fools everyone, the pupil included. Useful that you flag the check as an untested rule of thumb; it makes the rest easier to trust.

One of the biggest frustrations I come across is an apparent gap between pupils knowing something in the classroom and what they go on to write in the exam.
I take a look at why this gap exists and what we can do to address it.

Precisely this. What I call 'Curriculum Journey Knowledge': of what students need to know step by step. It's essential for teachers to plan successfully - but it's something distinctly beyond knowledge of the topic. heatherfblog.wordpress.com/2…

The point about conversation being cued stuck with me. "So what happens at the bend?" already does half the retrieval. Looking forward to the "say it out loud with no help" test in part two.

Why do some pupils seem so unwilling to answer certain questions in an exam?
I take a look at the evidence around barriers to writing and start thinking about how those barriers can be overcome

Despite the best efforts of schools, people don't seem so smart. Perhaps it is because we have been stuck between flawed models of education. I take a look at what has been tried, and where things have fallen flat.

What impact does education actually have on peoples' lives and their beliefs? What difference do we make in schools?
I took a look at the evidence - and it wasn't what I was expecting
