Mid-century mothers weren’t magically “fine.” Plenty were medicated with amphetamines, postpartum illness was poorly recognized, and many had far more informal help from family, neighbors, and older kids than mothers have now.
Women are not weaker. They lost the lost the village and the women who survived it are romanticized.

Dolly knew the difference. I’m not sure the rest of us do anymore.
So I went to the mural in East Nashville last night. Somebody had already left flowers. Somebody had already lit a candle in a jar.
I stood there a long time trying to figure out how one woman got a country this angry to agree on her.
