"Federal employees should be rewarded for what they can do, not for how long they’ve been on the job." Today, we @USOPM eliminated the historically anti-merit principle of gating promotions for top performing employees based upon their time in seat. No longer - merit prevails over tenure! usopm.substack.com/p/talent-…

Replying to @GShaneMorris
It’s the exact same use case as launching the old roadster into solar orbit near Mars. It’s sheer audacity. It is an example of what we can do, and more than that, what we can _afford_ to do. It is youthful exuberance and power in full display. It is a message to the rest of the world: “You can’t catch us.” Cue: We are the champions.

Last year I thought Threads was an existential risk to X. When Meta puts its full weight behind something -- by injecting the app into Instagram, it’s DEFCON 5: You have to squeeze out every last drop of growth from all available surfaces to save the app. However, I started to realize that the opposite was happening: It was strengthening X. If you look at any announcement by Zuck, you will see the most rude & toxic comments on the internet. But when he makes those same announcements on X, people are thrilled about how he’s pushing humanity forward. X is a place where people are excited about the future, so it’s no surprise he and his top lieutenants are using it more than their own app. Threads — and Bluesky — have effectively quarantined some of the worst people on the internet. And so I had an epiphany: those apps are X’s anti-abuse systems.

These NYC apartments are standing empty, not because the owners don't want to rent them, but because rent stabilization laws prohibit them from charging enough to earn back the costs of necessary repairs. My latest for @WSJFreeEx

AI won’t take your job. Someone who knows how to use AI better than you, will take your job.
We’re already starting to see what kind of new jobs AI is creating. AI requires significant technical work and surrounding services to deploy into the economy. This means jobs for AI engineers that build applied AI products sold to (or within) enterprises, FDEs to deploy agents into companies, new services firms for deploying AI, and more. And even the published stats of new jobs undercount all the existing jobs that are transitioning to new areas of AI work in an enterprise. Many prior data, research, and software jobs large enterprises are also being repositioned for working with AI. Every bank, life sciences company, manufacturer, and even law firm is bringing on more technical talent -or repositioning existing roles- to help with agent deployment in their companies. It’s a lot easier to picture what AI can replace vs. what it creates until it starts happening. Now we’re seeing what this looks like.

The anti-AI movement is going to be massive in the near future, and the model providers are walking right into it (and encouraging it). Their PR/comms strategy is so horrendous it’s indistinguishable from sabotage. On one side you’ll have philosophers trying to give AI rights and AI researchers claiming AI is conscious (whatever that means.) The Lesswrong/Yud/Stop AI/polycule folks claiming it’s going to kill us all. Luddite protests around employment, schools fighting brain rot/cheating, “water usage” and data center claims. Data usage and privacy battles popping up all over. Regulatory capture and the fight for open models, fighting the US Government and Department of War on how it must use the models in ways approved by the model providers, Chinese companies distilling and open sourcing models. And you’ll have trough of disillusionment hitting from enterprises that suck at using AI and are spending a fortune but aren’t seeing ROI (most of them). Right as the AI companies will require more money, data, and compute to win a market they will claim is bigger than the entire US economy today. Buckle up.

The nation owes a debt to @JGebbia and his excellent team. They worked incredibly hard, with no compensation, to make government services work better for all Americans. 🫡 🇺🇸
Imagine seeing your work announced on the national stage by the world's most gifted speakers, like @SecRubio who introduced our new design for the U.S. Passport, in collaboration with the State Department. National Design Studio is growing! ndstudio.gov/jobs

If I was Trump going into a big midterm loss, I would just go out with a bang: Cut entitlements & close the budget deficit It will crash the economy and he’ll be hated for 2 years—but history will remember him for saving the country.

It's very rare for politicians to cut their losses. The usual path is to make a bad decision (like starting a war with Iran) and then to pile more bad decisions on top. Meanwhile, American citizens are forced into a pressure cooker. Each bad decision increases the pain, until it becomes unbearable. President Trump could have cut his losses early in Iran. It would have stung, but by now, seven months later, it would've been forgotten. By not cutting his losses, the pressure on the American people continues to rise ... right before the midterms. I’m sure plenty of fields have a lot of dumb experts but in education it’s just overwhelming
"I even think that it’s really wrong for parents to ever try to push reading before 5," says Maryanne Wolf, director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners and Social Justice at UCLA. (1/n)

Dynamic pricing means prices go down as well as up. So this is conclusive evidence that either (a) she's stupid, (b) she's dishonest, or (c) both. The strange thing is, I genuinely can't guess which it is. Could she lie this overtly?
We should all be worried about "dynamic pricing." That's when companies change their prices in real time. If it's hot out, the cost of ice cream could go up. If it's cold, tea bags could go up. It's a way for giant companies to squeeze you even more.
