(4) I should also say during my time of managing the sewer network strict monitoring of the CSO was done to ensure that if it did operate and a discharge was made then samples were collected and analyzed to ensure compliance with its permit to discharge.

(3).....but many of these were installed quite a long time ago in what are now urban areas, which makes replacing them more difficult. With the introduction of separate sewers on all new build and SUDS, CSO are really considered an option now.

(2) ....the flows until there was enough down stream capacity. This single large CSO meant that we could do away with around 7 smaller CSOs which operated more frequently. Thus reducing the pollution incidents considerably. I'm not saying CSO are the ideal option now...

(1) I was part of the design team that installed one of these CSOs in Leominster in the early 1990s...back then this was the best solution to the problem of dealing with high levels of storm water in a combined sewer network. The CSO had built in attenuation which held back...
