Congrats to our team member @matilda_greig on this excellent review of her new book!
I’ve just finished reading @matilda_greig’s Dead Men Telling Tales. Napoleonic War Veterans and the Military Memoir Industry, 1808-1914. It is one of the most thought provoking and rewarding books I’ve read in ages. Greig looks at Memoirs of the Peninsular War written 1/
Heartfelt thanks once again to everyone who joined us online for the #EnemyEncounters conference a few weeks ago. On the last day we asked the audience to suggest keywords emerging from the papers & discussions: here's the food for thought! Wishing you all a lovely summer break.
ALT A wordcloud showing keywords voted by the audience at the Enemy Encounters conference. Largest are 'language', 'memory', 'race', 'fraternisation', 'gender', 'grievability', 'difference', 'reconciliation' and 'brotherhood.'

We had an audience of 153 at the @EnemyEncounters conference this week - plus one Very Good Boy. 🐶

so refreshing to see conference organisers being candid and emotional about how hard it is to pull an event off, and especially in this context. We should normalise these emotional reactions, and this is definitely one thing I'm taking away from @EnemyEncounters

Great end to an engaging conference! Very inspired by different approaches to how we think about war encounters/fraternization moments. Congrats to @FurneauxHolly & @matilda_greig for hosting a brilliant event! And thanks to Hannah Wills @I_W_M for excellent tech support!👏
Please join us for our final session, on key themes in the project and forthcoming book 'Strange Meetings'.
We'll then open the floor to what we've ominously called a 'collective reflection' on the last 3 days, followed by closing remarks from @I_W_M. 🥳

Thanks so much for all the speakers and organisers of @EnemyEncounters. A fantastic 3 day conference that has opened up so many ways of looking critically at conflict and cross-cultural encounters. Looking forward to seeing what else the project will produce.

you should be able to see the recording on the @EnemyEncounters crowdcast. The whole conference was brilliant and @matilda_greig and @FurneauxHolly are closing it with some very promissing remarks - I'd binge-watch the lot if I were you!

Had so much fun talking about what is, in my opinion, the most fascinating object in the @historial1418's collections: a poem written on a cupboard door by German soldiers in the hope that it would be found by British soldiers during the 1917 retreat.
Starting now:
Panel 8 - Reconciliation and Recovery: Veterans, Politics and Poetics, chaired by @FurneauxHolly
Speakers:
@juliarsct
Anna Branach-Kallas
@Voiceofaveteran
@VWilliamson_psy
