Roy Stannard, 74, and his wife Valerie Stannard, 73, inflicted years of suffering on five victims in Stoke Newington, London, between the 1960s and 1980s. The pair denied the allegations but were convicted following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. Roy Stannard was found guilty of child cruelty and multiple indecent assaults against a young girl. His offences included sexually touching the child and demanding sexual acts. He also punched and regularly beat another child. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, comprising nine years for sexual offences and three years for child cruelty. Valerie Stannard subjected children to appalling acts of cruelty, including holding a child's hands over a gas flame, placing burning newspaper down his trousers and forcing soap down his throat. In another incident, she tied a child to a chair and locked him inside a cupboard. She was sentenced to nine years in prison. The victims, now in their 60s, provided testimony that helped secure the convictions decades after the abuse took place. Amee Patel, reviewing lawyer for the Crown Prosecution Service in London, said the couple had inflicted years of psychological and physical abuse, causing immeasurable and lasting harm. The federal investigation revealed that Steiner used the instant messaging application Kik to infiltrate an online group dedicated to illicit and taboo subjects. An undercover agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) intercepted Steiner as he attempted to gain entry. To verify his identity and secure group privileges, the undercover HSI agent demanded that Steiner provide video proof. Steiner complied by transmitting a video confirming his identity. To secure entry into the group, he also transmitted a video containing illicit material involving a minor, which formed the basis for the federal distribution charge. Investigators also noted that the communications included discussions of other illicit interests. Following a Homeland Security Investigations raid on his residence on May 20, 2024, agents recovered electronic evidence related to the case. On June 9, 2025, U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson sentenced Steiner to 86 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release and a lifetime obligation to register as a sex offender.
