American is 37 years old, she had a heart attack 2 weeks ago
She has Cigna for her health insurance and they just mailed her a letter saying “after carefully reviewing the information, we determined the service is not medically necessary.” Her bill is $110,000 for staying in the ER for 2 days
“They don't think that saving my life was medically necessary — My total bill so far is currently at $110,000, is how much it costs to save my life. I'm sure there's more bills coming still, but Cigna doesn't think that it was medically necessary”
We need health insurance reform and we need it right now in America. Our entire medical system has been turned into a for profit scam
Just know if something like this happens to you, there is Federal Law that essentially says it has to be covered
Federal law under the ACA and No Surprises Act rules requires coverage of emergency services based on the prudent layperson standard: whether a reasonable person with average knowledge of health and medicine, looking at the symptoms at the time, would believe immediate care was needed to avoid serious harm
This just shows that coverage for this woman should have never been denied

Walked into a grocery store yesterday to grab four items.
Not a single human cashier lane was open. Just eight self-checkout kiosks, four of them blinking yellow with an attendant sprinting between them like an air traffic controller.
I scan a carton of eggs. The scanner screeches:
"UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA. PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE."
I wait three minutes. The employee scans her master badge. I bag my groceries, pay on the card reader, and head for the exit doors.
A security guard stops me three feet from the automatic doors, grabs my receipt, and intensely scrutinizes my shopping cart item-by-item against the paper receipt to make sure I didn't steal a bag of bagels.
Think about the absurdity of that transaction:
I found the inventory myself. I scanned the inventory myself. I bagged the inventory myself. I processed the payment myself.
And then I had to clear a mini-TSA checkpoint at the exit because the company doesn't trust the free labor they forced me to do.
If you want me to be an unpaid store clerk, at least give me the 10% employee discount at checkout.

We are quietly isolating an entire generation of older people from society, and nobody seems to give a damn.
I took my 84-year-old grandfather to his local bank branch on Friday.
The exact same brick-and-mortar branch where he opened his first account in 1978.
We pull up to the front doors. They’re locked.
Inside is an empty lobby with a small sign: “Cashless Service Hub.”
A young guy in a polo shirt opens the door and tells us:
“We don't handle teller deposits or paper checks here anymore. You just need to download the mobile portal and scan your routing number.”
My grandfather pulls out an old flip phone with a cracked screen and a paper pension check from his coat pocket.
His hands were visibly shaking.
The employee just shrugs.
“You can do it on an iPad, or have a family member manage the app for you.”
This man worked forty-two years in a manufacturing plant. Paid his taxes. Fought for this country.
And now he is made to feel completely useless and stripped of his dignity because he doesn't own an iOS device.
Tech isn't making life easier if it completely locks out the people who built the world we’re living in.
