I don’t think enough has been written about what we lost in 2016—not because Trump became president (that part we know), but because HRC did not. She was, by far, the most qualified non-incumbent ever. Because she’d already lived in the White House for eight years, there would have been no learning curve. She would have hit the ground running. (Like, she knows where the light switches are in the residence!) No candidate was ever more prepared for every aspect of the job. She is excellent in small groups. She wins people over because she’s brilliant and humble. She had great ideas that would have actually helped people most in need of help. And she had the savvy and the determination to implement them. Hillary Clinton would have been one of the greatest US presidents. That’s a hill I will die on. And our country hasn’t properly mourned this being stolen from us.
You don't have to love her politics, but Hillary has been the smartest person in the room for most of her life and most of you are just too dumb to see it. She spoke at her own college graduation as the first student speaker in Wellesley's history— she's always been that b*tch.

Honored and deeply thankful to have been selected as a Lubin Scholar at @DanaFarber. In our uncertain funding environment, this type of support is essential to young physician scientists dana-farber.org/research/our…

I just found that HHMI is posing and cancelling the competition for fellowships and such. Considering the current federal funding situation, private non-federal funding opportunities like their fellowships must have been the last hope for many students and postdocs. Is this the right way for those private institutes to react to the current situation? idk. Very frustrating for many nonetheless.

Finding out HHMI is canceling the Hanna H. Gray Fellows competition is heartbreaking. Especially since if they decide to hold it next year I’ll no longer be eligible

🧵 Many “hot takes” about the reduction of @NIH indirect grant costs to 15%. Let’s lay out the facts about the university grant management process & accounting. And then use this to project likely short and longer term impacts of the policy.

Tragic cuts to NIH indirect costs. This will be crippling for our nation’s research enterprise. “Indirect” is really a misnomer, as these funds support critical research infrastructure. This is devastating.
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

Hard time to be an early career investigator. I wonder how many of us who are walking this already tenuous path are worrying how this change (and potentially other ones in the future) will impact our research. science.org/content/article/…

Did you know: If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human, but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive. You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not.
