You heard of carbon offsets, now there's plastic offsets.
Here at the plastic treaty talks in Ottawa, the World Bank & Verra (the biggest carbon credits certifier) are discussing growing this new market. #INC4
We've been investigating it.
Our new story:
unearthed.greenpeace.org/202…
Five years ago firms involved in plastics (inc Shell, Exxon, Total, Chevron Phillips, Dow) launched an organisation to "end plastic waste".
Our new investigation looks at its work, its PR agency, role at the plastic treaty & new data on plastic production

It's published together with the Guardian today, with two pieces
theguardian.com/environment/…
For the second piece we looked in-depth at one of the Alliance's early projects in Bali, Indonesia, where a recycling facility is sinking into a mountain of waste

If you're flooded, you can apply for a government grant to help you recover.
But make sure you're in the right local authority, can pay upfront and hope enough other locals are affected this time (& not too many were in the past)

Will we soon be eating lab-grown meat?
Not if the livestock industry gets its way.
@zdboren has been digging into the campaign to stop this new technology getting off the ground in Europe

the IPCC says lab-grown meat can be a climate solution — but in Europe there’s a movement to have it banned.
i looked into it and found an influential lobbying effort fronted by a beef industry executive & funded by livestock interests

I would love to see something similar to @uproot_project in the U.K. but have struggled to count the number of climate journalists of colour in the U.K. while there are over 700 in the U.S. 🥲
If you exist out there and see this but I don’t know you, I’d love to connect 🌱
Last week I went to England's longest chalk stream-a protected area & one of the world's rarest habitats.
It's stunning, but suffering.
We analysed recent data on England's most precious nature sites & found three quarters are in a bad way. Our latest:

This graph shows when sites were last assessed.
Notice anything?
A quarter of sites haven't been assessed since the Conservative government came to power in 2010.

The UK's biggest humanitarian programme for Afghanistan has been reclassified as a climate aid project.
£150m from a project providing emergency food, shelter and healthcare now counts towards the UK's "climate finance" goals.
@CarolineLucas asks a simple question: Why?

Tory mayoral candidate Susan Hall has declined to leave the anti-Ulez Facebook groups revealed by Unearthed this weekend to be riddled with Islamophobia and celebrations of criminal damage - and has instead joined another one @richa__syal @aliceross_

The findings of our latest investigation hit PMQs today.
MPs urged the Prime Minister to "shed some light" on the "shady" Facebook groups we uncovered, as well as their “funding and their links to his party”.

📣 Important question by @DeidreBrock at #PMQs.
An investigation has found Tory staff and activists running a network of Facebook groups that have become a hotbed for racism, islamophobia and misinformation.
One of their members is Tory London mayor candidate Susan Hall.

For the past year, I've monitored anti-ULEZ protest marchers and groups, recently writing about how they've turned into an Islamophobic smear campaign against Sadiq Khan. Thanks to the @UE investigation team, we now know who is behind them. Tory staffers.

We wanted to know who was behind the dozens of closed Facebook groups opposing the rollout of London’s clean-air zones.
Turns out the groups are all run by Conservative councillors, staffers and activists - and what we found when we got into the groups shocked us
Residents and NGOs complained that many people living close by had not been consulted, and have experienced health issues, including breathing problems, headaches and upset stomachs, which they believe have been caused by the smell from the facility.
The story has been reported in the Financial Times.
