Like Belle with shelves of rocks instead of books. (But I would take that library any day, too!) Searching for powders of some samples I'm polishing, to use for XRD. I guess searching for rocks is today's theme... #DayOfScience #ScienceAThon

Got some awful awful news from the UH ohana last night. I always admired Jasper, a really wonderful human. If everyone could send a little extra care and love to this broken world today, it would mean a lot.

Jasper Konter. My PhD advisor, and one of the best, kindest, most brilliant humans I know. Fantastic mentor, an ongoing collaborator, and occasional awkward clothing twin (see photo).
Gone far too soon. I'm shattered.
I have alternated between weeping and rage too many times to count today. I don't even want to send my son to daycare tomorrow, I just want to squish him in my arms all day. What the FUCK is wrong with this country. My heart aches for the families of Uvalde.

or learn the shameful parts of U.S. history or have “love is love” photos in their yearbooks and honestly, what the fuck are we doing. All those dead children. All those broken families. Mothers who fed and bathed and loved those babies and trimmed their little fingernails …

It takes a monster to kill children. But to watch monsters kill children again and again and do nothing isn’t just insanity—it’s inhumanity.

Yesterday I was part of a discussion on paper writing and I would like to share a tidbit that has stayed with me for many years regarding writing a paper's introduction:
Write it like you're crafting the movie version of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

In two days, my son Geologist Daniel Robinson will be missing for 9 months. I hope to find him today. I appreciate everyone who are helping me along the way.
If you're one of those people who always get confused between a storm or tornado "watch" (conditions/ingredients exist) versus "warning" (there IS A storm or tornado in existence), here is a brilliant way to remember:

In the midst of Putin's horrific invasion of Ukraine, I want to express my solidarity with the many thousands of Russians who are out on the streets protesting the war. In an authoritarian society, they are risking their freedom and lives. They are showing incredible courage.
