At the beginning of Holy Week, our prayers are more than ever with the Christians of the #MiddleEast, who are suffering the consequences of a brutal conflict and, in many cases, are unable to observe fully the liturgies of these holy days. Just as the Church contemplates the mystery of the Lordโ€™s Passion, we cannot forget those who today are truly sharing in his suffering. Their ordeal challenges all our consciences. Let us raise our prayer to the Prince of Peace that he may sustain the peoples wounded by war and open concrete paths to reconciliation and #peace. #PrayTogether

The funeral of Father Pierre El-Rahi, Maronite parish priest of a Christian village, is celebrated today in #Lebanon, as these villages once again experience the tragedy of war. I am close to all the Lebanese people in this time of grave trial. Fr. Pierre was a true shepherd. As soon as he heard that parishioners had been wounded in a bombing, he rushed to help without hesitation. May the Lord grant that the blood he shed become a seed of peace for beloved Lebanon. #PrayTogether

Remembering those heroes who chose death rather than renounce their faith in Christ
Eleven years ago the world watched Islamic State militants behead twenty one Christians on a Libyan beach. The victims included twenty Coptic workers from Egypt and one from Ghana. They refused to renounce Jesus despite certain death. Images from the February fifteenth twenty fifteen executions shocked millions worldwide. Dressed in orange jumpsuits militants marched them to the shore near Sirte. Some cried out โ€œJesus help meโ€ or โ€œLord Jesus Christโ€ in final moments. The men could have lived by converting to Islam but chose Christ instead. Their courage inspires believers facing persecution today. Christians hail them as modern martyrs of the cross. We honor their names so bravery endures: โ€ข Bishoy Adel Khalaf โ€ข Samuel Alhoam Wilson โ€ข Hany Abdel-Masih Salib โ€ข Melad Mackeen Zaki โ€ข Abanoub Ayad Attia โ€ข Ezzat Bushra Nassif โ€ข Yousef Shokry Younan โ€ข Kirillos Shukry Fawzy โ€ข Majed Suleiman Shehata โ€ข Samuel Stรฉphanos Kamel โ€ข Malak Ibrahim Siniot โ€ข Bishoy Stรฉphanos Kamel โ€ข Mena Fayez Aziz โ€ข Girgis Melad Sniout โ€ข Tawadros Youssef Tawadros โ€ข Essam Badr Samir โ€ข Luke Ngati โ€ข Jaber Mounir Adly โ€ข Malak Faraj Abram โ€ข Sameh Salah Farouk โ€ข Matthew Ayariga
