I think we need to imagine a high school mathematics program where a linear course-taking pathway doesn’t exist. Like, just a bunch of cool math courses on offer...none of which is a prerequisite to another.

Educational privilege: The structural advantages that accrue to people who are “good at school” & that harm people who think & learn in other ways. The mistaken belief that people who are “good at school” are more intelligent than people who think & learn in other ways.

Daily reminder: If a bad, stupid, dehumanizing rule is disproportionately applied to students of color, the answer isn't to just make sure the bad, stupid, dehumanizing rule is equally applied to all children. Change the rules.

It only takes about 50 contact hours to transmit basic literacy and math skills well enough that kids can be self-teachers from then on. The cry for 'basic skills' practice is a smokescreen behind which schools pre-empt the time of children for twelve years.

Daily reminder: As long as schools are in the business of measuring and ranking children, the powerful will always find a way to make sure their children are ranked highest.

It's weird watching edu-Twitter get outraged by little tiny elements of non-consent, coercion, manipulation, & demeaning treatment of young people in the classroom. Hello. THE WHOLE SYSTEM is based in non-consent, coercion, manipulation, & demeaning treatment of young people.

It's very curious to me that people who have no problem crushing children on the daily with grades and test scores are so very concerned that everyone should be nice to them on Twitter. 🤔

In working with young writers, what I see is that many have lost all sense that the purpose of writing is to communicate a thing they actually think or feel. They are throwing words at the page in panic, in pomposity, as performance for a grade. There's a total disconnect. xitter.cf/smhumphreys/status/946…

What are we learning about society by the way in which our schools operate? Are we free? Are our decisions respected? Do we love what we do?
