Oh, Gateau Ghost, Bricolage, Tiger Baby. You know I love you, right? I do! But what we really really need on that stretch of College is a good green grocer, not another coffee and clay shop. So, as you were. But let’s hope we can welcome new friends and neighbours who bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the ‘hood.

The books selected by this year’s @GillerPrize jury are incandescent. They glow with stubborn light; the quietest voices rise loudest, and on every page, these stories insist on their own future. These five books represent Canadian fiction – daring, original, textured and thought-provoking – at its finest

I must mention the great Canadian writers who have supported the @booksforinmates program with author visits, like @waub, @TanyaTalaga and Lawrence Hill, among others, and who’ve given stirring testimonials about their experience.

We're grateful that, through our partnership with Book Clubs for Inmates, my team and I got the chance to visit a federal women's prison earlier this week. The experience was humbling, transformative, painful and beautiful by turns. The individuals who work at these facilities labour tirelessly on behalf of the incarcerated women to provide education, books and other vital resources. They are the unsung: they receive no rewards, awards, recognition or prizes. They attend to the work at hand. That work helps incarcerated women move from medium security to minimum, where they get more free time and greater access to the compound's libraries. Books can't unlock cell doors, but they can and do unlock imagination, information and pathways to the outside world. The library is the haven and respite the women inside prize most. The library shelves in the minimum security facility groan under the weight of so many books - fiction, non-fiction, steamy romances, self-help, biographies and more than a few Giller titles we donated through our partnership with Book Clubs for Inmates. We are indebted to Tom Best, Sarah Smith-Eivemark and Peter Stuart for their leadership, support, guidance and goodness in helping us make this partnership a reality, and for letting us experience, even a tiny bit, what life might be like without the luxuries we so take for granted.

An amazing night at the @glenngouldfndn gala last night to honour Sir Elton John with the 15th annual @glenngouldofficial prize. And what a tribute it was. The joint was lousy with rabid fans, an incredible lineup of artists - @jdutchermusic! Sarah Maclachlan! @ronsexsmithmusic - and more. @thebeachesband The Bitch is Back was killer

Nick Cave on the current moment facing the arts and artists. Culture should be 'a space for free-ranging and diverse ideas, a place of vitality and originality that encourages disagreement and good faith debate, (but that) is being sucked down the sinkhole of a single monolithic ideology — one voice, one cause, one dissent. theredhandfiles.com/film-fes…
