In 2013, a Zurich boutique refused to show a customer a $38,000 bag. The customer was Oprah Winfrey.
The bag was a Tom Ford crocodile handbag, locked in a case at a shop called Trois Pommes. Oprah asked to see it. The assistant told her it was too expensive for her and pointed her toward something cheaper.
Oprah didn't argue. She didn't say who she was. She left the store.
She told the story on Entertainment Tonight a few weeks later, and called it racism. Switzerland's tourism office apologised within days. The shop owner called it a misunderstanding: the assistant simply hadn't recognised her.
Oprah is worth about $3 billion. The bag was $38,000. That is one thousandth of one percent of her money.
