Are you in the mood for a story about gangs of roving children, a mechanical pony, anthropomorphic trees, playgrounds that give you ouchies, and crippling loneliness? You're in luck; please read my first foray into speculative fiction below. Thank you @EvergreenReview!
“She scrolled the internet for articles written by other unhappy women. Breast is best. Fed is best. Safe is best. Keeping the baby alive is best.” Up now: “A Mother Makes a Death,” a new short story by @ElizabethBrus. Art by Tidawhitney Lek. evergreenreview.com/read/a-m…

As we mourn Louis E. Brus, Bell Labs legend, Nobel Prize winner, & the inventor of #quantum dots, remember his words: "We are all trapped by our educational background. So, learn something new every day. This is the greatest skill we have." See more ➡️ nokia.ly/4bKOeoB

This seems like a great day to post this article I wrote for @The_Belladonnas in 2021. Should I write a follow-up? thebelladonnacomedy.com/gove…

I know Lesotho. I lived there for two years. These cuts are ripping life-saving medicines out of people's hands with no recourse to find them elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of people, including children, will die. Personal friends of mine will die.

As a lifelong middle and high school teacher (and now tutor) in many different settings (public and private), I can say this is mostly true. However, this pressure to read less is decidedly NOT coming from English teachers, but from parents and admin.
At elite colleges like Columbia, many students are showing up unprepared to read full books. It’s not that they don’t want to, @rosehorowitch writes. Middle and high schools have stopped teaching them how: theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…

This is not a public versus private thing. I've seen private schools with barely any reading, and public schools who read a ton. The main problem is that kids' attention is shot to sh*t, parents can't or won't enforce reading, and admin don't want to fight the parents.

Woo! I just got a "this manuscript is not right for us in spite of its evident merit" rejection from The New Yorker. I shall take this elitist crumb, press it into my heart, and nourish on it for many days as I toil away on my silly projects. #WritingCommunity
