So what happens when you pose Year 6 a design challenge? Challenge was to create a piece of fire fighting equipment that could be used stationary at individual houses to protect from future bushfires. @LEGO_Education @AlphaBalzer @stem_T4L @DoE_STEM
Challenged Year 4 to create something that moved. They have never used @LEGO_Education EV3 before. With a bit of help to sort the codes, they used problem solving to work through the faults and created this catapult. I was blown away. @AlphaBalzer @stem_T4L @DoE_STEM
The LEGO EV3 has been a huge hit with the senior school. Year 5 and 6 have been creating “nanobots” to fight viruses, linking into their unit microorganisms. Some great functional designs. @DoE_STEM @stem_T4L @AlphaBalzer
Changed up our coding for Year 2. Added some if statements. These kids nailed it. @AlphaBalzer @stem_T4L @DoE_STEM
Change up of our outdoor coding @AlphaBalzer @stem_T4L @DoE_STEM
A bit of outdoor coding for well-being week. @stem_T4L @AlphaBalzer
Unplugged coding to start the year off. Kids really enjoy solving the problem then finding their own way to explain the solution. @stem_T4L @learnPSNSW @DoE_STEM
Intro to coding lesson and refresher for year 4. Trying to get them explicitly giving instructions, just like code. They love solving the puzzles. Lesson finish, create an animal that links to science topic. Thanks @AlphaBalzer for the Kmart tip. @DoE_STEM
Stage 3 designing future towns with sustainable energy, community gardens, electric car chargers, sensored traffic lights, whole food shops. Then navigating them using @Sphero #futurefocused @AlphaBalzer @pipcleaves @mccallumtp
Using the @Sphero robots today to learn about angles and angle sums. Some of my year 4 students quickly understood that angles can be quite a simple topic, even when calculating missing angles. The Sphero really helps understand the 360 concept. @dizdarm @mccallumtp c u Wednesday
Totally not STEM related but we will@use this area so@much in the future. Eleebana’s new top oval is now world class.
Year 6 are studying a unit about natural disasters. Today they researched The Black Saturday bushfires and produced a news report. They had various scenes, added an intro filmed and edited their own broadcast. They loved it @stem_T4L @DoE_STEM #doitdifferently
Girls in STEM creating the jewellery of the future using @tinkercad and the #3Dprinter @DoE_STEM @stem_T4L @CareerswithSTEM @pipcleaves @AlphaBalzer
Year r using the @LEGO_Education kits to create catapults as part of their science unit. Linking hand on STEM activities in everyday lessons. @STEM_Share
Another group through our rotations and they continue to blow my mind. It is truely amazing what robotics can do for creativity, collaboration, design and being able to express yourself in different formats. How’s this for thinking and future focused skills. @LEGO_Education
Today’s challenge was to create a vehicle capable of travelling on a new planet and exploring resources that could be used for energy. This vehicle blew me away. 3 Students who in traditional lessons don’t generally achieve this type of excellence. @AlphaBalzer @STEM_Share
