John Whitaker is the showjumping veteran defying the doubters at 66

If anybody wondered whether, aged 66, John Whitaker was still able to cut it at the top then such doubts were quickly dispelled at last weekend's London International Horse Show.

Losing a final is heartbreaking. But the fallout is agony 💔 Racist abuse of national heroes. Women at 38% increased risk of domestic violence because England lost a game of football. Messages urging Black fans to hurry home to safety, away from the baying mob. Ashamed.😞

Beyond dedicating his life to public service, #PrincePhilip both shaped and enriched the horse world. @Telegraph #equestrian @FEI_Global @BritEquestrian @windsorhorse telegraph.co.uk/luxury/socie… – at South East, England

How Prince Philip's love of horses reinvented equestrian sport

The Duke popularised both polo and carriage driving - and his love of horses revealed his informal side, say fellow riders

Rachael Blackmore's historic triumph has shattered racing's glass ceiling once and for all | @jimw1 telegraph.co.uk/racing/2021/…

Rachael Blackmore's victory ends any debate about relevance of a jockey's gender

Thanks to Blackmore, whether male or female, from now on riders will surely be referred to simply as jockeys

The best journalist in the game. Hard not to lament how this reflects on the state of racing coverage in the mainstream. Though, I can’t help but hope Chris takes his talents to an online outlet where he can do his thing without the space restrictions of the print media.

I've finished my last shift at The Guardian - a sad moment, as I love the paper and many of its people. They want to do less on horse racing, so I'm moving on

The SPOTY montage is going to be short this year, innit? Fury knocking out Wilder and two minutes of Joe Wicks doing star jumps.

When I was weighing up the pros and cons of going freelance, I didn't write "threat of a global pandemic that will comprehensively wipe out all my work for an indeterminate period of time" in the cons column. Bit naive, that.
