Part 5/6: The controversial stuff (how why supply and demand means migration is much easier to manage in an ageing world)
Part 4/6 of my little optimistic story on the economics of the end of the world: "Everything will be fine" First three parts below, robots will take our jobs (1), climate is changing, (2) fertility is collapsing (3) 🧵

The Reform sting is really a story about who gets to manufacture political information (see comment linked below 👇) During the 9 GE between 1983–2017, polls appearing in Conservative-leaning newspapers systematically report lower Conservative vote shares than polls appearing in other news sources—and the difference becomes larger as election day approaches. In the final week, the estimated Conservative vote share reported by Conservative-leaning newspapers is 1.5pp lower. In the paper with @fetzert, we write that this pattern could suggest that polling is being used for “turnout engineering whereby aligned voters may be mobilised by a perceived worse expected performance in the run-up to an election.”

Linking back to the Reform sting, there are three separate failures here. A party seeking money from abroad to pay for polling. A pollster accepting an undisclosed commission, which sits uneasily with the industry’s own transparency rules. And newspapers running the results as independent findings without checking, or telling readers, who was behind them. Our work on UK general elections shows that polls published in the final weeks of a campaign can affect turnout: a poll is not a neutral piece of news; it is something people act on. [...] The practical answer is not necessarily to restrict polling, but to require disclosure along the chain. See expert comment link below 👇

Clues in data suggesting turnout engineering are a stable pattern across more than 1000 UK polls as @EleAla our paper from 2024 suggests. Differential partisan mobilization may be key. If polls are paid for by outside money to benefit a party, of course, it is interference!

Methodologically, the estimates on the cost of Brexit despite the heterogeneity point all in a similar direction. There are a few notable outliers, in particular the pro Brexiteer optimism. There is also a notable trend: estimates point to some form of compounding. For local...

This paper is obviously relevant today, as we mark the 10th anniversary of Brexit, but I don't want to add to the plethora of takes on current events. Instead, let me zoom out and disucss the (fairly nuanced) implications of our analysis both for understanding British politics

Its now ten years since the UK voted narrowly to Leave the European Union. I have studied how the UK got there through my research for many years now. Evidence is growing that the UK is indeed leveling up, but, by leveling down. Let me introduce the Brexit Cost project:
