That university presses manage to keep at things even though academic libraries have mostly stopped buying books and piracy is widely seen as a social good may seem like a miracle, but a lot of it comes down to precariously employed workers doing three times as many jobs.

In my role with @TheBJPS I have closely read 6464 referee reports. (When I get to 7000 I will reveal referee 2's identity. )

OA advocates must grapple with the thornier labour issues or face being useful idiots for the big for-profits
Lots of claims right now about Open Access as a liberatory project, but I think the late David Golumbia was right to identify OA as fundamentally right-wing. This is the abstract for one of David’s articles—I’m excited for his book “Cyberlibertarianism,” coming in November.

We are delighted to announce the arrival of BJPS Letters to the Editors. Something in the BJPS is wrong, you say? Highly implausible. But on the off-chance, write to us…More details here: thebsps.org/auxhyp/letters-t… #philsci #speakyourbrains

Part of my argument in this piece is something I will keep saying forever: Publishing is a skilled profession, with a rich history; it is a vital component in the dissemination and preservation of knowledge; it cannot be done cheaply, or replaced by computers or volunteers.

"the human labor inherent to publishing is rarely insignificant. In fact, in many cases [...] it is the main cost." Whether your employer is a uni or a press, everyone in publishing - authors, editors, reviewers, publishers - deserves a real job with proper wages and T&Cs.

If you're nearby this Friday, there's a sneak peek at some of this opera happening at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. It's quite good, all things considered.
Meet Des Oliver, the composer behind our Windrush – The Journey. Trained at Guildhall and Royal Academy, his music blends post-minimalism with African-diasporic influences. Performances include South Bank Centre and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Tickets in our bio👆

There’s more to publishing than simply uploading things to the internet, part 543: ‘more than 170 open-access journals had disappeared from the Internet between 2000 and 2019’
More than one-quarter of scholarly articles are not being properly archived and preserved, a study of more than seven million digital publications suggests go.nature.com/4c0NxVT

The women here (including Johanna) have been heroic. As ever, the cover up is what undoes the institution and it's baffling why anyone still pursues this strategy. I'd encourage others, including both established HoDs and those perhaps new to the role and dept, to remember this.
“Women silenced across ranks: LSE’s mishandled sexual misconduct investigation into professor” I made a contribution to this, in the hope something will change. thebeaverlse.co.uk/sexual-mi…

Granting my deep and unending hostility to efforts of academics to gut another profession, I'm deeply sceptical of a lot of these automation efforts for all but the simplest texts...
Content conversion (making HTML/XML) for scientific papers is much harder than people think [myriad styles and submission formats say hi; equations have just entered the chat] 1/n

Automation is also a hindrance to authors insofar as it seems to be de-skilling: noticeable increase in papers with near un-usable bibliographies as biblio software use increases. As a result, papers require more, not less, labour at the editorial end.

“The European Council has set a high bar in its call for ‘high quality, transparent, open, trustworthy and equitable scholarly publishing’. Achieving this goal means recognising the value and costs involved in academic publishing and resourcing it accordingly.”

Brian Cox reads If I Must Die, by beloved Palestinian poet, teacher and martyr Refaat Alareer. Refaat was killed on December 7th by an Israeli airstrike. This was the last poem he published.

Starting next year, we are moving from word limits (10k) to page limits (24pp). Word limits make less sense for work in which display equations and other technical material features heavily. But, as always, this won't include the reference list!
