🚨 New Book 🚨
Friends, @ElProfeBarba and I are thrilled to share the publication of “Sacred Refuge: New Histories of the U.S. Sanctuary Movement” coming this November from @NYUpress !
“Huerta wrote in an online essay: ‘Cesar’s actions do not reflect the values of our community and our movement. The farmworker movement has always been bigger and far more important than any one individual.’”
MY LATEST @latimes COLUMNA: And just like that, the Cesar Chavez myth is punctured. What's next? latimes.com/california/story…

Update: The Chicago clergy letter decrying ICE's actions and voicing a willingness on the part of clergy to put their "bodies on the line" to protest ICE has reached 250 signatures — and now includes multiple evangelical pastors/leaders of evangelical institutions in the area.
NEW: 200+ Chicago-area clergy — Protestants, Catholics, evangelicals — have signed a letter decrying ICE's efforts and voicing willingness to put their "bodies on the line" for migrants, saying, "What Kristi Noem and her ICE agents are doing is immoral. religionnews.com/2025/10/21/…

ICYMI: For years, faith groups have applied for a special govt program to help secure worship spaces.
But Trump’s DHS changed the conditions — such as apparently requiring grant recipients to cooperate with ICE.
Now, faith groups are voicing outrage. religionnews.com/2025/10/17/…

NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.
Three say they've been shot w/pepper balls, sometimes while praying.
All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/…

When asked, I had to share my thoughts on @UWMadison granting an honorary doctorate to the architect of one of this country's most restrictive pieces of immigration legislation. Really a head-scratching move.
Jim Sensenbrenner, who introduced the Patriot Act in 2001 and a controversial immigration reform bill in 2005, was honored Friday with an honorary doctorate from the Universtiy of Wisconsin, sparking backlash from immigrant rights advocates. buff.ly/inXGyW3
