Week 3: Security and Financial Compliance
Day 16: Cybersecurity Awareness Month
'We use a payment gateway, so card security rules don't apply to us.' Partly true, but risky. Here's why:
A payment gateway is a service like a checkout page that takes card details for you. If customers type card numbers only on the provider's page, much of the work shifts to them.
But your website still links to that page. If criminals change your site, they can send customers to a fake checkout or add hidden code that copies card details as they're typed.
So you still need to: protect your website, confirm which self-assessment form applies to you, and check your payment provider is itself compliant.
Outsourced isn't the same as out of scope. My free PCI DSS scoping checklist helps you work out what's still yours: reply SCOPE.

Week 3: Security and Financial Compliance
Day 15: Cybersecurity Awareness Month
If your business accepts card payments, there's a rulebook you've probably agreed to without knowing: PCI DSS. Here it is in plain English:
PCI DSS is a security standard set by the card companies (Visa, Mastercard and others). It isn't a law, but your payment provider's contract requires it. Ignore it and you can face penalties.
It has 12 main requirements, covering things like firewalls, encryption (scrambling data), strong logins, logging who accessed what, and regular security testing.
The latest version, 4.0.1, is now fully in force. Since 31 March 2025, extra requirements apply, like two-step login for anyone accessing card data systems.
The best money-saving tip: keep card data away from as many of your systems as possible. Fewer systems handling cards means fewer to secure and audit. More tomorrow.
If you missed day 1: my 3-minute anonymous survey on cyber awareness in Nigeria is still open. Results are free on 30 October.

Corruption does not always begin with the desire to become evil. It begins with pride that refuses correction, ambition that rejects restraint, a conviction that one's suffering justifies anything.
The fall may begin long before the person recognizes how far they have descended.

Week 2- Privacy
Day 10: Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Laws tell companies what to do with your data. Standards help them do it consistently. One key privacy standard just changed.
A simple explainer:
ISO is an international body that publishes standards: agreed best practices that companies can be independently certified against, like a quality mark.
ISO 27701 is the privacy standard. It sets out how to run a privacy programme: who's responsible, how risks are checked, how customer requests are handled.
Until recently you had to hold the security certificate ISO 27001 first. Since the new 2025 version, published 14 Oct 2025, ISO 27701 stands alone.
Why it matters:
HR firms, health providers and data processors can now prove good privacy practice directly. Holders of the old version must switch by around Oct 2028.

Week 2- Privacy
Day 9: Cybersecurity Awareness Month
'We follow Europe's GDPR, so we're fine under Nigerian law.' Not quite. The two laws are related but not identical. 5 differences explained simply:
1. Registration: Nigeria requires some organisations (those of 'major importance') to register with the regulator, the NDPC. GDPR has no general registration rule.
2. Yearly audits: Nigeria has annual Compliance Audit Returns, a yearly report showing you're following the law.
3. Nigeria licenses special firms (DPCOs) to help with these audits.
4. Fines are calculated differently: up to 2% of revenue or ₦10m in Nigeria for major organisations, versus up to 4% or €20m in the EU.
5. The rules for sending data abroad differ too.
Best approach: one privacy programme with a shared core, plus local add-ons. My free side-by-side comparison is yours if you reply COMPARE.
