🚨NEW: California spent at least $11 BILLION last fiscal year on a "shadow welfare system" for illegal immigrants, according to a new @CityJournal investigation.
Reporter Kenneth Schrupp says California built parallel programs funded with state money to provide benefits that federal law restricts for illegal immigrants.
Those benefits include:
• Full Medi-Cal coverage
• Cash assistance
• Rental assistance
• State tax credits
• College grants
• Low-cost car insurance
• Free phones and cell service
Reporters visited four public-services offices in Southern California. All four confirmed illegal immigrants can enroll in programs or collect benefits through their kids.
Medi-Cal is the biggest piece: roughly $10 billion a year covering about 1.7 million people, per the state's Legislative Analyst. New adult enrollment was frozen in January, but those already signed up keep coverage.
The report estimates a family of five (two illegal immigrant parents, an illegal immigrant grandparent, and two U.S.-born kids) could collect more than $100,000 a year in public benefits.
