We join +54 civil society organizations and independent media outlets in calling for the immediate release of six journalists from Egyptian investigative journalism platform Matsadaash, who were arrested in raids on their homes between September 28 and 29. Mohamed Ashraf Abu Emeira, Abdallah Qadry, Islam Barakat, Omar Helal, Mohamed Mahmoud, and Mohamed Adel reportedly remain in custody, with their whereabouts and the reasons for their arrests still unknown. The arrests of the entire Matsadaash newsroom represent an alarming escalation in the crackdown on independent journalism and freedom of expression in Egypt. Journalism is not a crime. Independent media must be protected, not silenced.

We JOIN the undersigned civil society organizations and independent media outlets, in condemning the escalating crackdown on independent Egyptian investigative journalism platform Matsadaash, which now includes the arrest of six journalists, constituting the entirety of the newsroom. Late into the evening of Monday, September 28 and early Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Egyptian security forces conducted raids on the homes of journalists Mohamed Ashraf Abu Emeira and Abdallah Qadry and took them into custody. Raids on the homes of other journalists working for the platform continued across several governorates over the hours to come. By the end of the day on Tuesday, Islam Barakat and Omar Helal were arrested from their homes in Gharbiya and Port Said, and Mohamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Adel were arrested from Cairo. Across the home raids, the raiding officers confiscated phones and laptops, including devices belonging to family members; refused to display a warrant; and refused to disclose where the journalists were being taken. As of the writing of this statement, the reasons for their arrest has not been shared and their location remains unknown.

NEW Report: We announce the publication of our report “Fishing Under Military Order: Lake Bardawil Under the Management of the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development”. The report documents the dispossession of indigenous Bedouin fishing communities of Lake Bardawil, in the heavily militarized region of North Sinai, at the hands of the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development- a military-affiliated economic actor that is progressively monopolizing food production chains across Egypt. Appointed to manage Lake Bardawil in November 2024 through a Presidential Decree, the Authority has established a monopolistic regime in which it acts both as a regulator and a market actor, introducing regulations that make fishing for local civilians progressively unsustainable through a process of state-sponsored water-grabbing. Today, as our research found, an entire community faces food insecurity and displacement, and at least 13 fishers have been arbitrarily detained or tried before military courts over minor administrative violations. The report is produced jointly with @Sinai Foundation and @EFHR. The report is available in Arabic and English at: tinyurl.com/58drevhp #Sinai #Egypt #LakeBardawil #Fishers

The ninth and penultimate day of our Business and Human Rights training program was held today. Reflecting the broader program's mandate, today's sessions equipped participants with cutting-edge foundations and methods in BHR research, mechanisms for redress, and advocacy resources based on real case scenarios and existing policy debates. The first session explored human rights due diligence along complex value chains, discussing real world dilemmas and solutions. The session was delivered by Maren Fluge Nordgreen, FUTURE-PROOF Project Coordinator at the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights. Her presentation introduced the FUTURE-PROOF initiative, a collaborative platform uniting around 40 companies across various sectors to share expertise, tackle challenges, and align their operations with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The second session was facilitated by Mahmoud Shalaby, a Regional Researcher at Amnesty International, who shared valuable insights from his extensive background in sociology and refugee economic inclusion and guided the cohort in exploring the state of minority rights in Egypt's economic landscape. The discussion unpacked how the intersectionality paradigm applies to business-related human rights violations, highlighting the importance of complementing BHR analysis with minority and indigenous perspectives. Our profound gratitude goes to our guests for sharing their invaluable expertise with our cohort, and to the participants for engaging proactively with today's contents, enriching the discussion for all those involved.

In the second session of our Business and Human Rights training program's seventh day, we had the privilege to host @husseinmagdy16 , an independent policy consultant specializing in MENA foreign policy and EU-MENA relations, and a former Deputy Regional Director of Amnesty International's MENA programme. Drawing on his extensive expertise, we explored the European Union’s business and human rights policies, advocacy mechanisms and tools, and resources for holding European firms accountable for their human rights impacts, including an in-depth discussion of relevant case studies. This session reflects the goal of our training program to equip Egyptian HRDs and researchers to explore issues and methods in BHR research, mechanisms for redress, and advocacy resources through an interactive, participatory approach. Our deep gratitude goes to our guest for sharing his expertise with our cohort, and to the participants for making the discussions so insightful and enriching for all those involved.

Today marks the seventh day of our Business and Human Rights training program dedicated to Egyptian HRDs and human rights researchers from diverse professional backgrounds. During the first session, we had the privilege to have two guest facilitators from the Human Impact Pathway (HIP) network: Dr. Mary Martin, Executive Director of the HIP network and a Senior Policy Researcher at @lseideas , and Dr. Maria Prandi, a BHR expert and business development, client relations, and training responsible at the HIP network. The session examined how businesses operate in areas of extreme fragility, conflict, and crisis, unpacking their social and environmental impacts, and how business conduct in these contexts can be investigated and aligned with ethical standards through approaches such as human rights due diligence and human security. It also included a critical comparison between the human impact and human rights approaches to corporate responsibility, introducing the concept and methodology of human security as an additional tool to mitigate and address business impacts in fragile contexts. Our deep gratitude goes to our guests for sharing their invaluable expertise with our cohort, and to the participants who made today’s discussions so insightful and enriching for all those involved.

We express our solidarity to @recommon and @evapastor3lli as they face a concerning intimidatory act in the form of a defamation lawsuit by Italian energy company @eni . The lawsuit, whose value amounts to €800,000, constitutes an evident act of retaliation against ReCommon’s commitment to energy justice in the Mediterranean space, and sets another precedent in the global backlash against civil society. The proliferation of attempts to silence critics, activists, and rights defenders through the weaponization of anti-hate speech or anti-defamation policy and national security law is a clear indicator of states and enterprises’ dedication to defend impunity instead of accountability and transparency. We condemn ENI’s attempt to silence critical civil society voices and reiterate our full solidarity with ReCommon and campaigner Eva Pastorelli in their decision not to back down in the face of intimidation.

Today, we held the third day of EgyptWide's training course on Business and Human Rights, with the participation of trainees from diverse professional backgrounds. Today's sessions focused on the role of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights in addressing business-related human rights impacts linked to multinational corporations and other business enterprises. One highlight of the day was the presentation delivered by Sonia Cuesta, Member of the technical secretariat of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights. Her intervention illustrated the Working Group’s mandate. The successive discussion explored critical issues in BHR promotion and protection, including safeguard mechanisms to ensure corporate compliance with human rights standards, the elimination of workplace discrimination against women in international law and in practice, and the complex challenges of holding multinational corporations accountable for their adverse human rights impacts. Additionally, Ms. Cuesta shared insights into successful cases where states have responded constructively to the Working Group’s official communications, highlighting best practices in the global effort to uphold corporate accountability. The training program on Business and Human Rights, running from April 3 to May 2, 2026, is designed to equip participants with the essential tools and methodologies for the systematic monitoring and documentation of business-related abuses. The syllabus blends theoretical and practical approaches to the investigation of human rights risks along complex value chains, prioritizing the exchange of expertise among participants to strengthen skills for effective advocacy of human rights safeguards, remediation, and redress mechanisms. We join, the undersigned civil society organizations from around the world, the call on Egyptian authorities to immediately release prominent activist, poet and political writer Ahmed Douma from pretrial detention and to stop their systematic campaign of judicial harassment against him. On April 6, 2026, many in Egypt started the day with hopeful news following Egyptian authorities’ long over-due release of a number of detainees in political cases. Meanwhile, Ahmed Douma headed to the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) following a summons that he had received a few days prior. As has become the norm, he was not informed of the accusations being made about him or the subject of his interrogation. Hours into the interrogation, Ahmed’s lawyers learned that he was being accused of “publishing false news and statements inside and outside the country with the intent to disturb public peace and spread panic,” in relation to an article he had published in Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, “From a Prison Within the State to a State Within the Prison,” which uses examples from around the world to present an argument on why political imprisonment is destabilizing for the state. He was ordered into pretrial detention for four days pending Case No. 2449 of 2026 and has been in Egyptian authorities’ custody since. Ahmed Douma has already spent over a decade in prison on politicized charges. In custody, he has been held in prolonged solitary confinement, denied adequate medical care, and subjected to treatment that Amnesty International described as torture. His detention was found to be arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Though Ahmed was finally released in August 2023 on a presidential pardon, authorities have not relented, depriving him of the chance to rebuild his life. Since his release, Ahmed has been summoned by prosecutors on at least seven occasions for his social media posts, writings, and activism. He has been made to pay bail, totalling 230,000 Egyptian Pounds. For Egyptian authorities to intensify their judicial harassment campaign of Ahmed by re-arresting him following a sustained campaign of seven interrogations is a severe escalation at a time during which Egyptian authorities should be doing the opposite -- releasing the thousands long-held in pretrial detention and stopping the prosecution of those exercising their rights to free expression, assembly, and association. At a time when Egypt is purporting to be a mediator in global conflicts, it cannot continue to pursue these retaliatory prosecutions and these sustained campaigns to silence its population over critical content. We, with the undersigned organizations, call on Egyptian authorities to course correct and immediately release Ahmed Douma, drop all charges against him, and close Case No. 2449 of 2026 in its entirety. We call on Egyptian authorities to lift the travel ban that remains imposed on him, end all ongoing prosecutions, and stop exercising its arrest and prosecution powers to silence him for his exercise of free expression and defense of human rights.
