US Republican lawmakers voice concern over unrest in NATO ally Albania Three Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives issued statements on October 17, 2026, addressing the escalating student-led protests and clashes in Albania. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) posted: “I am watching with great concern the escalating crisis in NATO Ally Albania. The Albanian people deserve freedom, rule of law, and institutional accountability. The government must refrain from all violence against protestors. Young people deserve a voice in the future of their country.” Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) stated: “I am deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in NATO Ally Albania. The Albanian people deserve the rule of law, accountable institutions, and the freedom to make their voices heard. All parties must reject violence, and the government must respect the rights of peaceful protesters. Albania’s young people deserve a voice in shaping their nation’s future.” Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) wrote: “The protests in Albania are a culmination of the people’s distrust of corrupt politicians and fatigue over the total disregard for the rule of law. Albania’s leaders need to heed the calls for substantive changes that will yield economic opportunity and foster regional stability.” The statements come as protests in Tirana and other cities entered a fifth day of clashes. Demonstrators, including high school and university students, have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama amid grievances over corruption, education costs, and high unemployment. Police have responded with tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets. Both sides have reported injuries, with hundreds detained and damage to public buildings and businesses. Rama has rejected resignation calls and attributed the violence to political opponents or external interference. The lawmakers’ comments converge on institutional accountability, respect for peaceful protest rights, rejection of violence (particularly by authorities), and the need for young Albanians to help shape their country’s direction, with Self explicitly tying the unrest to longstanding public distrust of political elites and weak rule of law.

🇺🇸🇦🇱 Dr. @saliberisha_'s visit to the United States and his meeting with our #AlbanianAmerican community mark an important moment for the future of Albania and the Albanian nation. Dr. Berisha is fighting for Albania in an unjust battle against political rivals who oppose democracy and the rule of law, and who for years have denied Albanians free elections 🗳️ His return to the United States, after the @realDonaldTrump administration revoked the unjust and political “non grata” designation, has created new momentum for Albania: to return the country to the right path, so that one day Albanians can vote in free elections, democracy can be real, the rule of law can function, friendship with America can be sincere, and institutions can serve the people, not those in power. The Albanian-American community has always been a force for the progress of the Albanian nation. With Dr. Berisha’s return, we must come together as a community, work with our friends in Washington, and make sure Congress, the Senate, the State Department, and the White House know the truth about Albania and the Albanian people. A strong, democratic, and pro-American Albania 🇦🇱🇺🇸 also helps our free and independent Kosova 🇽🇰, strengthens the position of Albanians in the Balkans, and brings our nation closer to the Western democratic world. God bless America. God bless Dr. Berisha, Albania, Kosova, and the entire Albanian people 🙏 #HarryBajraktari _ @POTUS @VP @SecRubio @DanScavino @StateDept @StateEUR @USEmbassyTirana @RepKeithSelf @RepJoeWilson @RitchieTorres @RepRitchie @jahimes @Robert_Aderholt @RepLisaMcClain @RepMcGovern @RepVeasey @RepScottPeters @repdeliaramirez @ZachNunn @PeteSessions @RepLoriTrahan @RepPatFallon @RepGLatimer @realBrandonGill @RepBrandonGill @RepJuanVargas @RepMikeLawler @Albanians4USA @Albaniapd @pdfushata @fatmirmediu

I am so grateful for my dozens of colleagues who rightly support holding the OSCE PA Annual Session in Charleston and not Serbia. It would be wrongheaded to hold the event in a country so cozy with Iran, China & Russia. At this critical time the event must be held in America!
