Some of my thoughts about the surge in AI-generated papers, why this feels like a completely new kind of problem, and what this means for how we evaluate science in biology. Out now in PLOS Biology: journals.plos.org/plosbiolog…

"how to avoid brain rot" was a great watch. some of my favorites points: - using ai to ask yourself socratic questions instead of giving you the answer makes you feel like you're learning less but research shows you're actually learning more - ai tooling is moving so fast that it's better to know 50% of a new tool than to master 90% of an older tool

– at Meguro-ku, Tokyo

AI was supposed to make us work less I've never been this tired in my life most days I have up to 10 agents running at the same time. one fixing a bug, one writing pages, one refactoring something I already forgot I asked for, 3 other I have no idea what they are doing but i suppose i ask it? and I jump from conversation to conversation all day compared to 5 years ago, I probably context switch 100x more by the end of the day my brain is fried. completely toasted. nothing left, not even for the people I love I call it the fried brain effect thought it was just me but almost every founder I talk to lately says the exact same thing we got superpowers, and somehow the pressure only went up. if you can ship 10x more, you feel like you have to ship 10x more. every single day I don't have a solution honestly I have no idea where this goes from here anyone else feeling this?

You can now run Minerva in your browser. Predict base-pairing, repeats, and other coevolution in seconds: huggingface.co/spaces/gbrixi…
Genomes are full of dark matter of unknown functions. We present Minerva, a new method for discovery guided by genome language models. Minerva reveals the interactions hidden in non-coding DNA, pointing to hundreds of new putative RNAs and repetitive elements per bacterial genome. Minerva allows us to find and study elements invisible to traditional methods at orders of magnitude greater scale than before.

Sloppy research is outpacing peer review. Our answer: one-sided verifiers. #OSVerify filters out as much flawed research as possible while keeping human review manageable. On 11 OpenAI math preprints it caught 5 significant errors, all confirmed by experts.
AI-generated scientific output is scaling beyond available human review capacity. Scaling scientific discovery requires scaling verification. We introduce OSVerify, a framework for one-sided verification: rejecting as many invalid solutions as possible while preserving rare valid ones for expert review. We used OSVerify to referee 11 recent OpenAI math preprints, identifying 5 major and 13 minor issues, all verified by human experts. Our key insight: checking a proposed error can be easier than judging an entire solution. Instead of directly judging solution correctness, OSVerify decouples verification into error proposal (searching for potential errors) and error validation (checking whether they are real and substantial). On competition and research mathematical benchmarks, OSVerify reduces invalid solutions requiring expert review by 46% on average compared to voting under the same low-FNR constraint, or 57% with an RL-trained validator. Verification can also guide discovery. OSVerify can be integrated into existing scientific discovery workflows. Paired with an agentic math solver, it helped resolve 3 open conjectures in the Langlands program and contributed to resolving the Manin constant conjecture. All proofs were confirmed by mathematicians. Our broader goal is to provide verification-based evaluation signals for scientific discovery, enabling test-time scaling and self-improvement even when reliable automatic evaluators are unavailable.
