One of the strange misconceptions of Quebec nationalism is the myth of domination by "les anglais." The truth is that the dominant strains of British Canadian culture were Celtic, i.e. Scots and Irish, the bulk of whom were hardscrabble people who had survived the Highland Clearances or the Irish Famine, both of them underdogs with no great love for the English. The most poignant example: Wolfe's shock troops at the Plains of Abraham were the Fraser Highlanders, almost all of them descendants of families who fought on the Stuart side during the last Jacobite uprising. After the British victory in 1759, many of them settled on farms throughout Lower Canada, and were integrated into French Canadian culture (easily, as they were generally Catholic.) Highland Scots worked closely with French Canadian voyageurs in the vast fur trade operations of the HBC and NWC, together building the first European communities across much of North America, often with nary an Englishman in sight! Famine Irish were a huge part of the Quebec population after the great emigration, again integrating well into Quebec society given their common religious sentiments. Thomas D'Arcy McGee was the personification of their experience, moving from Fenian rage towards the English to seeing Canada as a new beginning, rooted in a more benign and pluralistic British Imperialism. There are countless similarities between the traditional culture of the Highland Scots, Irish, and French Canadians. Tough people who lived closed to the land, were deeply motivated by their faith, and were determined not to let the English suppress their folkways.
Scottish Gaelic Folksongs of Nova Scotia: This version of “Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna” was sung by Rev. J. D. Macdonald and recorded by folklorist Helen Creighton in 1951. Some of the footage shows soldiers from Cape Breton heading off to war on Sept. 4, 1939.

They would be better off. Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too.

🇨🇦 Thank you Prime Minister @MarkJCarney for your continued support of the Canadian brewing industry! Happy Canadian Beer Day 🍻
From the Canadian farmers growing the barley and hops, to the brewers who turn them into a great pint — happy Canadian Beer Day.

It wasn’t the elites that powered the empire, I understood. It was the rising industrial and commercial class, which weren’t anything like this describes.
Another wonderfully illuminating piece of historical research by the outstanding @SCP_Hughes.

I’m glad CR7 didn’t make this all about him . . .
🚨🇵🇹 OFFICIAL! CRISTIANO RONALDO STATEMENT: “This is the truth on what has happened with Jorge Jesus”. As I promised, I decided to recount, in the first person and directly, the circumstances surrounding the last training camp of the National Team. After the 2026 World Cup I prepared a letter to the Portuguese people, which I still keep, with the words I want to address to them when I leave our team for good. At the end of the competition, already on the flight back from the United States, the President of the Federation asked and insisted that I reconsider the decision to leave, because the FPF wanted me to continue. Right afterwards he asked me for my opinion on the name of the current head coach, which he was considering alongside other names he did not reveal to me. I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice. That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming. A few days later I received a first contact from the new national team coach saying he would like to meet me in person. I said yes and we scheduled it for the end of my holidays. We met at the Cidade do Futebol, where my club was holding its pre-season training camp. That day the coach told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project. He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match. At that point he raised the possibility of me not travelling with the national team to Norway and Denmark. He proposed that I play the first match and stay in Portugal, then rejoin before the match at the Dragão. I refused this proposal immediately. It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it. It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example. The coach ended up agreeing with my analysis. This conversation was attended by Simão Coutinho, sporting director of Al Nassr, the person to whom the current coach reported throughout last season and one of those responsible for his signing by the club in 2025. On the eve of the start of the camp the coach came to my house in Lisbon, at his request, for another conversation with me. The conversation was calm and all the principles agreed in August were maintained. I played the match at Alvalade and, although substituted, I made no problem of it. I put the armband on Bruno Fernandes myself, far from imagining that I might be taking my last steps as a player and captain of the National Team. What mattered to me that day was our victory. Winning is always good; in Portugal and for my country, even better. At lunchtime on the day of the match in Norway, an assistant to the coach came to the table where the group was having lunch and informed me that the coach wanted to speak to me. To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes. I was fully focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day. Without any problem. This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan — because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão — but of course I said yes. He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes. The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me.

Thanks for the support and happy Canadian Beer Day! 🍻
Happy Canadian Beer Day! 🇨🇦🍺 As co-chair of the Parliamentary Beer Caucus, it was my pleasure to welcome Beer Canada and their members to Parliament Hill on Monday, and to attend a fantastic reception in the evening celebrating all things Canadian beer. It was likewise an honour to meet Mr. John Sleeman, the founder of Canada’s iconic Sleeman Brewery in Guelph, and host him and members of the Beer Canada team at my office. Today, I hope you get the chance to sit down with a pint and celebrate our country’s phenomenal beer industry. As a brewer myself, I relish in the opportunity to support this industry in Ottawa, and I look forward to continue championing the Beer Caucus for all parliamentarians as co-chair.

One of the best renditions of poetry ever recorded. Actor Michael Sheen delivers a powerful performance of Dylan Thomas’s 1951 poem, "Do not go gentle into that good night.”

As a journalist and lifetime Albertan, I am saddened that the EDM Journal and CGY Herald are so far behind a national outlet on our own politics. But I’m thankful for @CarrieTait. Boy, am I thankful.

China keeps approving more rounds of urea exports, and that has the market bearish! If my count is right and they follow thru, their exports for 2026 may be nearing double their normal annual rate. Even better, most of those exports are coming 2nd half of the calendar.

CRU's expectation, unchanged by last week’s announcements, is that Canada will remain the lowest-cost and most readily available source of US #potash supply over the medium term. Further tariffs or restrictions on Canadian imports would fall mostly on US farmers #MOP #fertilizer

I’ve never thought Western separatism was a real thing. I’m from Saskatchewan. Everybody’s a Canadian patriot. Some ppl wish they could pay less tax. That’s not an existential issue.
I was distinctly told that separatism was inevitable, separatists are the authentic voice of Alberta, tomorrow belongs to us etc. etc.
