This shows that for some (most?) of you, the concerted villification is more about Leni than anything else. And the sooner we admit that, the better.

Two well-known mayors in the Philippines, Mayor Joy Belmonte and Mayor Leni Robredo, both received Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh for official engagements. Yet the criticism surrounding Leni Robredo's courtesy call appears to have gained far more attention. And I cannot help but wonder, why does one meeting become a reason to question someone's principles, while another seemingly passes with less scrutiny? I understand the anger and disappointment surrounding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Thousands of innocent lives have been lost, families have been displaced, and countless Palestinians continue to suffer. These are not matters we should ever take lightly, regardless of our political beliefs. But if our concern truly comes from compassion for Palestinians and our commitment to human rights, then shouldn't we apply that same concern consistently, regardless of who is involved? This is not about bringing Mayor Joy Belmonte down or protecting Mayor Leni Robredo from criticism. Both are public servants whose decisions deserve scrutiny. And neither should be exempt from difficult questions simply because of their reputation or the respect they have earned. What concerns me is how easily a serious humanitarian issue can become another political argument about personalities. We begin by talking about the suffering in Gaza, but somewhere along the way, the conversation shifts toward which politician deserves our anger. And when that happens, we risk losing sight of the very people whose suffering made this conversation necessary in the first place. We can question these diplomatic engagements without automatically assuming political endorsement. We can express disappointment without dismissing someone's entire record of public service. And we can hold our leaders accountable without allowing our political preferences to determine the standards we apply. Because standing for human rights should never depend on whether we admire or dislike the person involved. If our principles are truly rooted in humanity, then they must remain consistent, even when the person being questioned is someone we respect. At the end of the day, the people of Gaza deserve more than another political argument in the Philippines. They deserve genuine compassion, meaningful solidarity, and a commitment to accountability that goes beyond political names and affiliations. Let our concern for humanity be greater than our political differences. And let our standards remain the same, no matter who stands before us.

ISRAELI AMBASSADOR VISITS NAGA, MEETS MAYOR ROBREDO LOOK: Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh visited Naga City on Monday, meeting with Mayor Leni Robredo and touring key cultural sites, including the Museo ni Jesse Robredo and Huna Huna Art Space. Ambassador Kush's visit comes as Israel remains under international scrutiny over the ongoing war in Gaza and tensions across the Middle East. The Philippines, however, continues to maintain diplomatic ties with Israel, a longtime partner in agriculture, technology, security, and labor cooperation. Kursh, who assumed her post as Israel's ambassador to the Philippines in 2025, met with Robredo to learn more about Naga's governance initiatives and local cultural heritage. | 📸: Naga City Tourism/ Facebook

Let's learn to be realistic, especially in the realm of politics. Remember that Leni, right now, is a mayor. An ambassador represents an entire country. If she refused the courtesy call, it would have been a potential diplomatic issue which can be taken against her personally, and against our country as a whole. Leni accepting the courtesy call does not mean that she supports the genicidal actions of the Israeli government. Don't rush to conclusions.

It took time but finally Sen. Koko admitted his mistake of allowing the Dutertes to join PDP-Laban. Many of us knew how the party emerged and fought the dictatorship only to be used for worst reasons. The party is not the same anymore. Worse, it is worse.
