The isolated reefs of the Coral Sea are often out of sight and out of mind, but the effects of ocean warming were impossible to miss over a month of research with @CoralCoE alongside @Parks_Australia. @ProfTerryHughes this definitely adds to the GBR story.

How about using just a sliver of that money for researching the fundamental ecological rules of these ecosystems? Would be a hell of a lot more useful than all this wilful self delusion.

Exposed reef flats in the Coral Sea are often pretty bare, but it sure makes it easy to see the scattered corals when they are all bright fluorescent or white. Seems like a lot of new recruits after the 2016 #coralbleaching suffered in 2020.

Turns out all the colour and movement in the shallows is deceptive, its further down the slope that most of the species hang out. Time to look a little deeper!

Changes in coral diversity over depth allow a uniquely clear test of some fundamental hypotheses explaining general diversity patterns. It's not always popular to ask hard questions of long held ideas, but a more informative approach is now needed. royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

Top tip: It's time to stop using depth range as an ecologically relevant factor/trait in corals. If you read between the lines theres food for thought in here, particularly considering most species are rare throughout the majority of their range... esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi…
