I have been struggling to find the right words to say. This is not how anyone thought the story would end. The outpouring of support and prayers from family, friends, and the courthouse community has been appreciated more than you can know. I know that the seas ahead will be stormy and rough, but we will sail through them back into sunny skies. harriscountycriminaljustice.…

Harris County has lost one of its finest public servants. Judge Kristin Guiney was my Chief when I served as a young prosecutor in the 185th District Court, and I will be forever grateful for her mentorship and guidance in seeking justice. After her years as a prosecutor, she defended the accused with the same conviction. On the bench, she led efforts to steer people who needed treatment toward a second chance. Later, as head of Angela House, she helped women rebuild their lives after incarceration. It's hard to think of anyone who has done more to fight for this office and this community than Kristin. Our thoughts are with her family, her friends, and everyone whose life she touched.
The First Court of Appeals is very saddened to learn of Justice Kristin Guiney’s untimely passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her entire family. Here is the Court’s full statement: txcourts.gov/media/1463409/s…

Thank you Governor Abbott. She is missed and we are devastated.
Cecilia and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Justice Kristin Guiney. I was honored to appoint her to the 232nd District Court in Harris County. She dedicated her life to public service as a prosecutor, trial court judge, and Justice on the First Court of Appeals. She also gave generously of her time to Star Court, helping those less fortunate build better lives. Her fairness, tenacity, and brilliance will long be remembered. Our prayers are with her family.

It's a little known fact that when Nietzche said "if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes at you" he was actually talking about being an Aggie football fan.

The SEC and every other conference needs to do the same thing. The current state of college football has become absurd.
Sources: The Big Ten is set to pass a rule today that doesn’t allow players to return from the NFL and play for a Big Ten school. Anyone who has declared for the NFL Draft and did not withdraw, appeared on an NFL roster or signed a contract with a pro league cannot be on a Big Ten roster.

Can someone please give me college football equivalents for these teams?

I'm not trying to pretend to be a soccer expert - I most definitely am not. But my hypothesis is that our most elite athletes end up in the NFL, NBA, MLB etc. I'm not sure how well these Belgians could hold up against our best safeties, receivers or Derek Henry running at them.
In Germany, a talented 14-year-old earns his club money. In America, his parents pay the club $15,000 a year. That single inversion explains why "we will not" is the most accurate line ever written about US soccer. FIFA built a global system for this. Training compensation and solidarity payments send a cut of every transfer fee back to the clubs that developed the player, from age 12 onward. Develop one future pro and your academy gets paid for a decade. Barcelona's La Masia, Ajax, every Bundesliga academy runs on this logic. The kid is the asset. US Soccer refuses to enforce those rules. When Seattle's Crossfire Premier claimed its $60,000 share of DeAndre Yedlin's transfer to Tottenham, it got nothing. Claims on the Dempsey and Bradley transfers died partly because the federation couldn't even produce the youth training records. So American clubs earn zero dollars when a kid turns pro. They earn when a kid enrolls. Which makes the parent the customer, and the product is whatever keeps the parent writing checks: travel tournaments, hotel weekends, $500 showcase events, private training at $100 an hour. Elite pathways run $8,000 to $20,000 a year. A comparable academy spot in Italy costs about 120 euros. Follow the incentive one level deeper and it gets darker. A club dependent on fees can't cut its weakest paying players, so rosters optimize for retention over development. The scouting pool shrinks to families who can afford the cliff, which appears around age 11, exactly when development matters most. The country runs a talent filter sorted by household income instead of ability. Every four years someone proposes fixing this. The proposal always requires the people profiting from the $15,000 model to vote themselves out of business. They will not.

This is poetic
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

The irony of Texas Tech threatening a breach of contact action when that same university breached their employment contract with Mike Leach, never paid him, and then hid behind sovereign immunity to avoid paying out his contract.
The Texas Attorney General sent a formal letter to the Big 12 today alerting the conference that Texas Tech would take action against any league sanction.

Is there anything that has been made better by private equity? I’m open to being wrong but it seems to me that PE makes everything it touches worse.

This is sound advice.
If I had one piece of advice for trial attorneys, it's this: Spend a solid hour thinking about your jury instructions before trial. Do not make them a morning of afterthought. Good instructions win trials. And when a judge rejects a good instruction, that wins appeals.
