Journalist Jake Taper shows the 130 year old blood stain on the Capitol stairs where Congressman William Preston Taulbee was shot and killed in 1890. The gunman, journalist Charles Kincaid, had written an article that had ended Taulbee's political career. Every time the two men bumped into each other they would get into heated arguments and confrontations. But on February 28, 1890, things escalated significantly. Earlier that day, Taulbee had grabbed Kincaid and thrown him around by the collar. Angered by this, Kincaid returned home to get his pistol and then returned to the Capitol to shoot Taulbee. Taulbee died 11 days after he was shot. Kincaid faced a murder charge, but a jury deemed it self-defense and acquitted him.
