This is an excellent example of the difference between effective and ineffective approaches to teaching and learning chess at the highest level. The key lesson is that talent & hard work alone are not enough. Players must objectively evaluate their methods, recognize their weaknesses, and be willing to change their approach when it is not producing the desired results.
Many top players have made this mistake by failing to critically assess their decisions and learning processes. The same principle applies beyond chess: success requires continuous self-evaluation, adaptability, and the ability to learn from experience!
Equally important, professional chess players MUST prepare for life beyond competitive chess. Developing skills, interests, and career opportunities outside the game should be part of their long-term planning. Those who do not prepare for the next stage of life risk facing significant challenges when their competitive careers end!

🇮🇳 Ramachandran Ramesh, coach of Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali, on his approach to coaching and the sacrifices required to succeed in chess:
"It's not about milestones. It's about what is the price you are willing to pay, most of my students, they don't play video games. I try to convey how I look at this whole journey is likely to be and what's the price they have to pay.
I would say they should be able to spend 6 to 8 hours of chess practice for a few years, and then in that time, if they are happy with the progress they make, they can take a call whether to continue further in that direction or to take a different path."

Chess teaches children valuable, transferable life skills, such as thinking before they move, analysing before they act, and considering consequences before making decisions.
These lessons extend beyond the chessboard, helping children become more thoughtful, strategic, and responsible in their everyday lives.
