Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the U.S. government to call Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The move came after trade talks with Canada collapsed and Washington slapped 50 percent tariffs on billions in Canadian goods. Trump said Canada has been ripping the United States off on trade and that he does not expect much business with Ontario going forward. He compared it to renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Clinton posted: “It’s Lake Ontario.” That was it. Replies were turned off on her account. Conservatives still piled on. They pointed to her 2016 loss. They noted Democrats racing to defend a Canadian provincial name instead of backing an American president in a trade fight. Michael Knowles wrote that Democrats preferring Canada to America was the least surprising thing of the day. Vince Coglianese said she was “shooting blanks.” The post cleared 3 million views in a few hours. Trump can change how federal agencies label the lake on U.S. maps, contracts, and official documents. The Interior Department and the Board on Geographic Names have 30 days to update the federal system. The U.S. Geological Survey already started changing electronic records. He cannot force Canada, New York, private mapmakers, or the rest of the world to use the new name. Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, said the lake will remain Lake Ontario “today and forever.” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said New York will not call it Lake America. The name itself is older than both countries. It comes from an Indigenous word, not from the Canadian province that later took it. The name change is a jab, not a peace treaty. The larger fight is over trade, tariffs, and whether the United States keeps absorbing a bad deal. Hillary’s three-word lecture did not stop the order. It just handed conservatives another easy target and reminded everyone that her comebacks still miss.
