For most of the year, he was ordinary... Just another bundle of cloth & straw facing the relentless horizon... But when October rolled in, everything changed. The farmer’s children would carve a fresh, round pumpkin, hollow out its core, & carve a jagged, toothy grin before placing it securely over Barnaby’s wooden peg neck. Inside the hollow shell, they nestled a thick beeswax candle, shielding its flame with the carved lid. As twilight bled into a deep, velvety indigo across the fields, the wick would catch. A warm, flickering amber light would bleed through the pumpkin's carved eyes and wicked grin, casting a dance of shadows across the golden stalks. While other scarecrows stood blind & frozen in the dark, Barnaby could see. The glow illuminated the frost creeping onto his burlap shoulders & caught the glint of curious field mice scampering past his boots. More than just seeing, Barnaby could feel.
