How was it malicious? Did the model actually have malicious intent when it hacked the system, or was it simply trying to achieve a goal albeit not aligned? Weeds don’t have malicious intent either; they simply compete for survival. I think the wording matters in this context.

For the first time ever, scientists at the Arc Institute used AI to design completely new viruses that have never existed in nature. They trained the model on DNA patterns, asked it to invent entire viral genomes, synthesized them in the lab, and got 16 working bacteriophages that infect and kill bacteria (including tough E. coli strains).
These viruses only target bacteria, so no risk to humans, and they open the door to powerful new phage therapies against antibiotic-resistant infections. A genuine scientific milestone that feels like science fiction arriving early.
