Today marked the grand opening of the new 5.2-mile MetroLink rail extension to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport! The Illinois Department of Transportation joined Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and state, local, and community leaders in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the landmark completion of the segement and its affiliated road and bike trail improvements. The extension connects MidAmerica with St. Louis Lambert International Airport and distinguishes the St. Louis bi-state region for having the only transit system in the country that spans two states and directly connects two major airports some 45 miles apart. Led by the St. Clair Country Transit District, the project marks the first MetroLink expansion in 20 years! For more information on the project and today's ribbon-cutting, visit: gov-pritzker-newsroom.prezly…

Earlier this month, East-West Gateway Sustainability Planning Manager Aaron Young presented a new Land Surface Temperature (LST) Map identifying the region's severe "heat islands" to audience memebers attending the Living Earth Collaborative annual summit at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The map depicted a significant number of areas in urban, suburban, and even rural areas of our region that harbor ground surface temperatures ranging from 100 to over 110 degrees during the summer and shoulder seasons. The creation of the map by East-West Gateway staff was particularly timely given the severe September heat wave that recently struck our region. Learn more about heat islands at ewgateway.org/news

East-West Gateway's official tagline is "Creating solutions across jurisdictional boundaries." Today, our staff took that motto to heart during their monthly brown bag by mapping out how the work done in each of of their departments connects, supports, and strengthens one another in the agency's overall mission to drive solutions that advance the St. Louis region. East-West Gateway has five departments focusing on community planning, transportation planning, research, regional security, and administration. Each department and the dozens of complex projects and programs within them are all important components that must work together. The staff did a great job today mapping out those connections to understand the bigger picture and impact of what they do day-to-day.
