🧵 Record-breaking day for Great Britain's electricity system! ⚡
1/ On 22 April, we hit a new zero-carbon record, with zero-carbon sources providing 98.8% of our electricity.
It was a worthwhile meeting for all of the Associations, with a key takeaway being that from the choice ofname to the implementation, eVED was not well received, well thought through, or even fully considered against many other policy goals across the UK.
Earlier this week we met with officials from HM Treasury who are leading the Government's eVED consultation. We shared our analysis of the pay-per-mile proposals and discussed the cross-border driving issues unique to Northern Ireland...

The good old Daily Mail - claiming EVs deliver “no proven carbon savings” in the UK is seriously misleading.
What the article actually cites is an argument about national accounting visibility — not evidence that EVs emit as much CO₂ as petrol cars.
That’s a huge difference.
“Hard to isolate in aggregate data” ≠ “no savings exist.”
The UK grid has rapidly decarbonised over the past decade. Coal is virtually gone. Renewables + low-carbon power now dominate. That means UK EVs get cleaner every year they’re driven.
Petrol cars don’t.
Extensive lifecycle research — including analysis reflected by the UK’s Climate Change Committee and global assessments from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — shows EVs typically produce substantially lower total emissions than equivalent petrol/diesel cars in countries like the UK.
The Mail article doesn’t show evidence that a typical UK EV has equal lifetime emissions to a petrol car — because most peer-reviewed studies show the opposite.
It reframes uncertainty about measurement scale as proof of “no benefit.”
That’s not how evidence works.
Are EVs perfect? No. Battery production and supply chains matter. Grid mix matters. Policy design matters.
But claiming “no proven carbon savings” contradicts the broader body of lifecycle science.
Debate policy by all means — just don’t let a headline blur the underlying evidence.

While we can agree that EVs should pay VED, an intelligent phased transition with EVs paying less than all Dino juice burners is key. Maybe a different set of increments based on weight, encouraging different battery sizes and vehicle design?
