1/6 A @sussex_police police officer was cleared of assault in court last week. He was accused of using force on duty — the kind of decision officers make in split seconds. He was found not guilty. But guess what? Not one local outlet reported the verdict. Let’s talk about that. 🧵

Mob Violence Erupts Again: Library Torched, Firefighters Attacked in Latest Merseyside Unrest In another night of violent disorder, approximately 300 people were involved in serious unrest on County Road, Walton, on Saturday, 3 August. This latest incident adds to the ongoing turmoil in the region, marked by attacks on police officers, the destruction of community properties, and disruption to essential services. Escalation of Violence The group began gathering around 20:00, quickly turning to acts of violence and disorder. Among the targets was the Spellow Lane Library Hub, a recently opened community centre designed to support one of the country's most deprived areas. The ground floor of the hub suffered severe damage due to arson. The crowd obstructed @MerseyFire firefighters responding to the blaze, who attempted to prevent them from extinguishing the fire. A missile was thrown at the fire engine, breaking the rear window of the cab. Widespread Damage The violence also extended to a local convenience store, which was set alight after being looted by a mob. The thieves stole numerous items, including the till. Other shops in the area were broken into, and several wheelie bins and industrial bins were set on fire. Arrests and Police Response @MerseyPolice made 23 arrests throughout the day: 12 related to disorder in the city centre, nine on County Road, and two connected to previous disorder in Southport. Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss condemned the violence, saying, "The violence and damage caused on County Road this evening is sickening and nothing can excuse the deplorable behaviour seen on our streets today. The impact of the disorder will be devastating for the people of Walton, but I promise that we are doing everything in our power to arrest those involved and bring them to justice." ACC Goss highlighted the challenges faced by emergency services: "Throughout the day our officers have been confronted with violence on the streets of the city centre and on County Road. Firefighters who attended to put out a fire at the Spellow Lane Library Hub were also confronted by the group who tried to prevent them putting out the fire. These actions are utterly despicable." He noted the involvement of young people in the violence, urging parents and guardians to monitor their children's activities. "Many of those involved were young people and sadly, they were probably local. We are urging parents and guardians to make sure they know where their children are and what they are up to." ACC Goss also appealed to the public for assistance in identifying those responsible. "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the violence, or who knows those who were involved to contact us so we can find them and bring them to justice. In the coming days we will be examining footage from police body worn cameras and CCTV footage to identify the culprits." Support and Cleanup Efforts ACC Goss expressed gratitude for the support from multiple police forces and emergency services: "I would like to thank our officers, and officers from West Midlands, Lancashire, Cheshire, North Wales, Cumbria, and Greater Manchester, who have been so professional throughout the day, and have bravely stepped up to the plate despite having bricks, wheelie bins, industrial bins, and other items thrown at them. "I would also like to thank Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service for their support, the North West Ambulance Service, and staff at the Royal University Hospital who have provided medical assistance to our injured officers, and Liverpool City Council, who will be out in the early hours of the morning trying to clean up the street and restore some semblance of normality." Community Impact and Continued Investigations The ongoing violence follows a series of disturbing events in Southport and the broader Merseyside area. The community, already reeling from a tragic knife attack and subsequent unrest, now faces further setbacks as essential services and facilities are targeted. As investigations continue, Merseyside Police have urged anyone with information or concerns to contact them directly via DM @MerPolCC, message the Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook, call 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111 or through their online form at Crimestoppers UK.

12 Years for Thuggish Attacker Who Hospitalised Three Officers with Knife Wounds A man who viciously attacked three @ClevelandPolice officers in Stockton has been sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison. Mark Fox, 35, from Billingham, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and was found guilty of two counts of wounding with intent following a trial. Incident Details On Friday, 2nd June 2023, police officers attended an address on Corfe Crescent, Billingham, after receiving concerns for a man's welfare. During their visit, they encountered Fox, who was armed with a knife. Fox became aggressive and attacked the officers, causing significant injuries. Two officers sustained puncture wounds, while a third received slash wounds. All three officers were hospitalised and required stitches. Sentencing and Reactions Fox was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on Monday, 15th July. Following the sentencing, Superintendent John Wrintmore, the district commander for @StocktonNPTs, condemned the attack and emphasised the daily risks police officers face. He stated, "Police put their lives at risk every day by protecting members of the public, and attacks such as this one are both shocking and truly disgraceful." Wrintmore highlighted the officers' bravery and dedication, noting that no one should be attacked while performing their duties. He praised the officers' response to the incident, which led to their nomination for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024. They were named regional winners for their bravery and courage at the awards ceremony on Thursday, 11th July. Statistics on Police Assaults The incident involving Fox is part of a broader troubling trend of assaults on police officers. Over the past year, Cleveland Police have reported 245 assaults on their officers, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. This reflects a worrying rise in such incidents nationwide. In 2023 alone, 79,091 officers were assaulted in the line of duty across the UK, a ten-year high. Superintendent's Statement Superintendent Wrintmore underscored the importance of supporting police officers through the criminal justice system. He stated, "Fox's actions were extremely dangerous and reckless. Today's sentence sends out a strong message – our officers deserve the full support of the criminal justice system, and I hope this dissuades anyone from using violence towards emergency workers simply doing their job." This sentencing serves as a stern reminder of the risks faced by police officers and the severe consequences for those who perpetrate violence against them.
