Last night, Watertown passed an ambitious plan to not only add needed housing in Watertown Square, complying with MBTA Communities, but to also revitalize the Square, reclaiming 3.3 acres of vehicle space for new green space and wider pedestrian areas. 📍Watertown, MA

Don’t listen to him. If you can then go vote early. Don’t leave it to Election Day in case something comes up.

Newly released study shows that separated bike lanes reduce maximum car speeds by 28%, average speeds for turning cars by 21%, and 8% for cars going straight. If cities want to reduce speeding, they should install separated/protected bike lanes—it’ll also get more people biking!

Today! Worcester City Hall 3rd flr, 6pm then council at 6:30pm!
🚨🚨Tuesday at 6pm is a Rally in support of lowering speed limits and safe streets organized by Walkbike Worcester. Please come join us! 🙂🙏 And then City Council at 6:30pm (both 3rd Flr of city hall). We need to make several points to our council: ➡️ Lower speed limits to 25mph *citywide* (as T&P unanimously recommended), not street by street. ➡️ 👆 This is the 1st and easiest step for the council to take, it is important and will help but it is not sufficient. ➡️ We need support *and funding* from the council for DTM’s Vison Zero project. ➡️ The carnage on our streets is *not* inevitable. We can and will beat it. Though it looks good now we must keep the pressure on until it’s official (as well as making clear that we need much more). I will be thanking the councilors who have come on board with 25mph but will be demanding more going forward. Come and be part of what should be a very positive change and hopefully the start of a real sea change in the city! ✊

The city of Worcester is working to address what some leaders are calling “traffic violence” in the heart of the commonwealth; mainly the number of people who are hit and injured or even killed by vehicles. specne.ws/42779J

Amsterdam’s status as a cycling paradise was never a given. Residents had to fight for it. To paraphrase Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the city. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Museumplein. 1978 vs 2024.

"Sometimes, a shop owner claims his business was ruined because the city removed 4 parking spaces. With surveys, our mayor can say: ‘6,000 more people pass your shop a day thanks to a new bike lane. Are you sure you’re a good businessman?’” — Jan Gehl in #Straphanger #Copenhagen

Here's @Etel_Haxhiaj 's powerful speech at Worcester City Council last night. I hope our entire council can come together to support: - Reducing the speed limit to 25mph. - Increasing enforcement. - Supporting and greatly increasing funding to DTM for Vision Zero changes.

🚨🚨 Worcester City Council is today at 6pm! ▶️Please come and speak in favor of safe streets and the 25mph policy! Now is to time to urge council to support this policy. It will be voted on in T&P committee on Sep 4th and then (hopefully) at city council on Sep 10th. 79 other communities have adopted 25mph including fellow gateway cities Lowell, Holyoke, Pittsfield, and Springfield. You can speak in support of @Etel_Haxhiaj 's item 14a (see below). We have had a horrible string of terrible incidents on our streets including children being killed and horrible injured. Please urge council to support 14a and the Vision Zero efforts of our DTM. Here's an article detailing some of the tragedies: telegram.com/story/news/2024… Here are the meeting details: worcesterma.gov/city-clerk/p…
