The EPA OIG found that a nonprofit that received an EPA grant terminated an employee in retaliation for disclosing potential inaccuracies in the organization’s grant documentation. The whistleblower disclosed that multiple employees were listed as full-time employees for more than one grant, meaning that the organization potentially double billed the government for multiple salaries. Additionally, the whistleblower disclosed that the organization did not remove former employees from grant documentation. Read: epa.gov/office-inspector-gen…

If you believe that you have observed this scheme, report it to the EPA OIG Hotline: epa.gov/office-inspector-gen…

Today marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. On this Patriot Day, we remember those who lost their lives and the first responders, recovery workers, volunteers, public servants, and countless others who stepped forward in the aftermath. OIG staff saw firsthand their incredible commitment. In the years following the attacks, our office carried out oversight of the EPA’s response to the World Trade Center collapse, interviewing more than 100 dedicated officials, air quality experts, rescue and demolition workers, and residents. As we reflect on this immeasurable loss, we are reminded of our nation’s resilience and the strength of our communities. Never forget.

Each year, we prepare a compendium of open recommendations that identifies recommendations the EPA has not yet implemented. While the EPA closed six recommendations between March 31, 2026, and May 31, 2026, 77 remaining recommendations represent $265.2 million in potential cost savings. Read: epa.gov/office-inspector-gen…
