On 13 October, ENC brought together policymakers, journalists and media experts for the event titled “Protecting Independent Media and the Costs of Not Taking Action”, hosted by MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk under the EU co-funded #AGILE project.
Following opening remarks by MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk (@ilhankyuchyuk), Jonathan Van Meerbeeck (DG INTPA) and Samuel Doveri Vesterbye (@SamuelJsdv - ENC), David Dieudonné (Informed Stories) delivered a keynote on “The Costs of a Silenced Media.”
In a panel moderated by Farhod Rahimi Rahmat, speakers from the Philippines, Colombia, Kenya and Europe explored the pressures facing independent media worldwide:
🔹 Legal threats, from Colombia’s proposed anti-terrorism bill to gaps in EU anti-SLAPP protections
🔹 Shrinking audiences as AI-generated summaries divert clicks
🔹 Information gaps affecting minorities and remote communities
🔹 Journalism education struggling to keep pace with AI
In a dedicated MEP panel, Nela Riehl and Ilhan Kyuchyuk highlighted why the EU should invest in, develop and protect independent media both within the Union and across its neighbourhood.
