New paper out! Free-ranging dog (FRD) populations are increasing and are becoming a huge problem for wildlife conservation and people in several regions of the world, especially the Global South. FRDs are killing people and wildlife. In this perspective.. rdcu.be/dmQot

Thanks so much for putting this out there. It is so important that we talk about good supervision, and what that looks like, as well as the bad, which often gets more press
What are some good qualities your supervisor has? #PhDVoice @PostdocVoice

I have really enjoyed working w many fantastic EU students over the past few years & am saddened that this is only open to UK nationals. I'm sorry that this is where we are. But options to come from the EU for an internship are very much open

What a pleasure to explore data from red-billed choughs and visualize their behaviour as they are reintroduced to Dover by the team @WildwoodTrust
Productive time at @SwanseaUni last week working with @ELCShepard analysing the behaviour of reintroduced choughs with data collected using their 'Daily Diary' tags. Looking forward to getting some nice results! #redbilledchough #research #conservation #reintroduction

IMPORTANT news: 14 guillemots and 4 razorbills from the current mortality have all come back negative for #HPAIV from @APHAgovuk This supports the idea that this mortality is related to prey availability. Is this the extreme marine heatwave's effects? #aukwreck #heatwave

I'm absolutely delighted Manos - this is richly deserved and they couldn't have awarded it to a nicer person. Huge congratulations! 🙌

The Isle of May kittiwakes currently being hammered by Avian Influenza. Mortality was low until the last fortnight creating a thoroughly depressing situation. We aren't yet seeing mass mortality at the nests, as also noted in 2022. 1/2
The east coast of the U.K. is being hit badly by avian influenza for a second consecutive summer. Vulnerable populations are threatened further and it’s depressing to see. The blog has the story: isleofmaynnr.wordpress.com/

Back from monitoring seabirds on Isle of Canna. Thankfully no sign of birds currently being affected by bird flu, but following last summer's outbreak razorbill down 32%, guillemot down 58% and fulmar down 68%. Shag, kittiwake and puffin OK.

Whoop whoop! Fingers crossed all goes well. Can't wait to see your data
First round of tagging complete ✅️ Our red-billed chough chicks were fitted with their tags yesterday and are getting ready for release! Three types of tag are being used (thread) with each bird carrying one type. @KentWildlife @WildwoodTrust @ELCShepard @PTES

This is fabulous! (and reminds me of a talk I gave on soaring and morphology where I said auks weren't going to be soaring any time soon - just goes to show that if the air is rising fast enough...). Wonder if guillemots ever manage it
First proper westerly wind in ages. Recording sheets tied down, hat stapled to head, binoculars rammed in eye sockets. But the Razorbills are wind dancing a metre away. The best auk, surely? Discuss @TheSeabirdGroup @UK_CEH @SteelySeabirder @nature_scot @Natures_Voice
