This project takes hyperspectral imaging into that gap. Novel imaging techniques let us visualise and measure biogeochemical elements of sea ice that have cascading implications for polar ecosystems.
Sea ice is one of the hardest environments on Earth to observe. Algae growing inside the ice, their pigments, minerals like gypsum forming as it freezes and releasing as it melts, all happen at scales conventional remote sensing and coring simply miss.
Finally happy to share our publication on HIcyBot in the Oceanography journal! 🎉🤖❄️
Robots under-ice & hyperspectral imaging for environmental monitoring in Antarctica
Could this methodology be integrated in your Antarctic studies?

In #Antarctica, a daily radio check or “sked” is more than a safety protocol. It’s a lifeline, a laugh, a voice from the world beyond the ice❄️📻❤️ Short featured research supported by @AntarcticSciAus @AntarcticaNZ @IMASUTAS @niwa_nz @AntaPlatform youtube.com/watch?v=C9Jda8jL…
Yesterday was the 1603th birthday of our beautiful #Venice. With all of its wonders (history & architechture) and curses (sea level rise & mass toursim), it remains for me the place where everytime is the same level awe.
Happy birthday! (what a video)

The physiology of trees drives the beauty and complexity of leaves "colours" and here we developed metrics to capture these spatially complex (functional) variations.
We also made a video of the field and lab work conducted to produce this work!

What can the new Hyperspectral Imaging (HI) ROV #HIcyBot do?
· Works in two modes: sea-ice and benthic scanning (two highly interconnected worlds).
· Every frame of the high frequency imager is timestamped via GPS clock to acoustically provided underwater position and attitude.
Under-ice ecosystems are extremely hard to access & monitor. This is the first dive of the custom @AntarcticSciAus Hyperspectral Imaging (HI) ROV #HIcyBot <3❄️🤖! How can the technology improve monitoring of the sea-ice realm? Stay tuned!

It's a weird line of work, but we love it. From getting excited about finding a jungle of melosira Arctica vines under the ice, to contemplating a random ladder in the middle of the ice floe emptiness.
Thank you #PS138 #Arcwatch Station 6. You were a treat. @MarcelNicolaus
Short trailer of our BEAST ROV operations with @MarcelNicolaus for under-ice hyperspectral imaging of sea-ice algae as part of #PS138 #Arcwatch voyage.
Whats below the ice at the end of the melt season?
More news to come!
