Today at Engage Trade Africa 2026 in Durban, ECICโs Head: Short-Term Insurance, Ntombifuthi Priscilla Mdluli, took the conversation on African trade from opportunity to action.
Speaking on โDe-risking South African Exports: Turning Cross-Border Opportunities into Bankable Transactions,โ Ntombifuthi highlighted a critical factor in unlocking the potential of South African exporters: managing the risks that can stand between a promising cross-border opportunity and a bankable transaction. This conversation is particularly relevant as Africa advances the ambitions of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) โ creating greater opportunities for businesses to trade across borders, expand into new markets and build stronger regional value chains.
But market access alone is not enough. For African trade to translate into sustainable economic growth, businesses also need the confidence, finance and risk-management solutions to take those opportunities forward. That is where export credit insurance can play an important role โ helping South African businesses manage commercial and political risks while strengthening the bankability of export transactions. As Ntombifuthi shared with delegates today, de-risking trade is about more than protecting a transaction; it is about enabling businesses to pursue opportunities with greater confidence.
ECIC is proud to be part of the conversation at Engage Trade Africa 2026 and to contribute to building a stronger, more connected and more competitive African trading environment.
From cross-border opportunity to bankable transaction โ ECIC is committed to helping South African exporters take the next step.

Did you know that only about 5% of the South African exporters contribute 95% of total export value? This reflects that export growth has not been inclusive and broad-based. In the rest of Africa, the size of unmet trade finance demand remains too high, averaging about $74 billion per year over the 2020-24 period (bit.ly/4rBpDZr). In view of this, the ECICโs role in the African trade finance ecosystem in the decades ahead will be consequential. South African exporters will increasingly seek opportunities in renewable energy, critical minerals, digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and sustainable infrastructure. At the same time, exporters will require sophisticated risk management solutions to navigate an increasingly uncertain environment. The ECIC is well positioned to support this next phase of growth. Building on twenty-five years of experience, strong institutional capabilities, and a clear developmental mandate. The corporation will continue to play a pivotal role in promoting South African exports towards the R3 trillion target by 2030. However, its true contribution lies in enabling economic activity that creates jobs, generates income, strengthens industries, builds infrastructure, and most importantly, improves lives. On 24 September, Heritage Day, South Africans come together to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories that shape our national identity. This yearโs theme, โReimagine our heritage institutions for a new era,โ reminds us that heritage is not only about preserving the past โ it is also about using our history, knowledge and collective identity to shape a more dynamic, inclusive and innovative future.
At the ECIC, we believe that building South Africaโs future requires us to embrace our diversity, empower our people and create opportunities that contribute to sustainable economic growth. As we celebrate the heritage that makes our country unique, we also reflect on the legacy we are building for generations to come โ one founded on resilience, transformation, empowerment and progress. May Heritage Day be a celebration of who we are, where we have come from, and the future we can build together.
ECIC wishes all South Africans a Happy Heritage Day 2026!

Launched as part of ECICโs expanded mandate into Short-Term (SMT) Insurance, the Export Passport Insurance Facility was established with an initial fund of USD 80 million. This was projected to grow to USD 500 million over five years. Its purpose is direct: to bolster black industrialists, SMMEs and exporters across all short-term insurance products. The facility provides insurance support for financing arrangements offered by South African commercial banks, the @IDCSouthAfrica, the @DBSA_Bank, the @NEFCORP, or directly by the exporter through vendor financing. ECICโs Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) Programme is a strategic initiative designed to drive economic transformation, promote inclusivity, and foster the growth of emerging businesses within South Africaโs export and industrial sectors. The programme encompasses both Enterprise Development (ED) and Supplier Development (SD), ensuring meaningful support for small enterprises and the creation of sustainable suppliers within ECICโs value chain. This #ECIC25Tuesday we are showcasing the Milisani Holdings ECIC ESD success story.
With ECICโs support, Millysun's, a catering, confectionery and decor company, has been able to acquire a Toyota Quantum with refrigeration, transforming the way the business transports food, equipment and staff to events. The addition of a tow bar has further increased its capacity, enabling the business to transport trailers and additional catering equipment and take on larger events. The impact extends beyond operational efficiency. The branded vehicle has strengthened Millysunsโ professional image and credibility with clients, while the acquisition of slushy and ice cream machines has eliminated the need to hire equipment for events โ reducing costs, improving profit margins and enabling the business to offer a broader range of services. Most importantly, this increased capacity and business growth has enabled Millysun's to create employment, with the appointment of an additional permanent employee. This is what meaningful ESD support looks like: strengthening businesses, unlocking potential, creating jobs and contributing to inclusive economic growth.
ECIC is proud to support businesses such as Millysun's Catering & Events as they build stronger, more sustainable enterprises and create opportunities for the future.
Through our ESD programme we continue to make meaningful invests in small businesses, enabling growth and creating impact.

Nyiko Mabunda, ECIC Head: Political, Economic Analysis and Research (PEAR) says: โThe ECIC is open for business and is able to support the defence industry.โ In promoting aerospace and defence industry exports, the ECIC has pledged to collaborate with Denel and other exporters within the industry. The ECIC already supports defence sector exports. For example, in 2010 the ECIC underwrote a deal to for the delivery of HF and V/UHF military radios to the Indonesian military and has had several other defence inquiries over the years.
South Africaโs plans to establish an Export-Import Bank by 2028 could unlock significant opportunities for local defence and aerospace exporters. At the inaugural Defence Industry Lekgotla, Nyiko highlighted how export finance, guarantees and insurance can help South African companies compete more effectively in international markets. Around the world, Exim Banks and export credit agencies play a critical role in supporting defence exports. A South African Exim Bank could help address one of the industryโs longstanding challenges: access to competitive export finance. The ECIC is already playing a key role in laying the foundations for this future institution and is open for business in supporting South Africaโs defence exporters.
With the right combination of finance, insurance and investment, South Africa has an opportunity to strengthen its defence industry and grow its footprint in global markets. ECIC is well-positioned to continue supporting South African exporters to compete globally.

Africaโs rail sector is at a critical juncture. Across Southern Africa, reforms are opening the door to greater private-sector participation, new investment and the expansion of freight rail capacity. A recent Engineering News article however, highlights that there is a vital piece of the infrastructure financing puzzle that cannot be overlooked: risk mitigation and insurance. For large, capital-intensive projects, the ability to manage and transfer risk is fundamental to securing financing. Investors, lenders and project sponsors need confidence that the assets underpinning their investment are protected against risks that could threaten a projectโs viability. The article underpins how the role of the ECIC becomes particularly important.
As South Africaโs export credit agency, ๐๐๐๐ supports South African companies participating in major projects across Africa by providing insurance against political and commercial risks. By helping to mitigate these risks, ECIC can strengthen the bankability of projects, facilitate access to finance and support South African businesses in pursuing opportunities beyond our borders. The development of Africaโs rail infrastructure is about more than moving goods. Efficient rail networks can strengthen regional trade, connect markets, support industrialisation and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
The South African government ratified the Luxembourg Rail Protocol, an international treaty that creates a global legal system to make private financing for trains and railway equipment cheaper and easier, on 27 January 2025. Under the Protocol, selecting a 30-day insolvency grace period, institutions like the ECIC are already offering up to a 20% risk premium discount for Protocol-compliant deals? ECIC is proud to play a role in supporting South African exporters as they contribute to Africaโs infrastructure development and economic transformation.

31 August is not just the end of Womenโs Month 2026, but also marks 100 days of our CEO, Linda Seroka, who took up the role on 1 June 2026. It seems fitting to close out the month with thoughts from our CEO on the first critical months of her leadership journey at ECIC and her reflections on Womenโs Month 2026.

โThe first 100 days were about creating momentum around one idea โ our aim was to ensure that viable South African export opportunities are not lost where ECIC and its partners can unlock the necessary financing and risk capacity. i.e. where an export opportunity is sound, our job is to help build the financial bridge that gets it over line. That meant listening deeply to the management team on what is working well and what requires improvements to make this possible, strengthening collaboration with business partners and challenging ourselves to move with greater urgency. The ambition is larger than a number on a scorecard. When a South African company wins a contract in Africa, factories can stay open, jobs can be created and supply chains can grow. My first 100 days were about reconnecting our daily work to that consequence โaligning our day-to-day work to our strategic objectives and mandate in order to turn ECICโs balance sheet into possibilityโ.

โWomenโs Month reminds me that the freedoms we inherit were once acts of courage by women who refused to accept the limits placed on them. For me, 9 August is therefore not only a celebration; it is a responsibility. Each generation of women must widen the road for the women who come after us. I think especially about economic freedom. A woman who can earn, own, invest, insure and build has choices โ and choices change the trajectory of families and communities. That is why representation at the top matters, but it cannot be the finish line. Our leadership must translate into institutions, markets and systems that work better for women who may never sit in our boardrooms. I honour the women before us by asking a simple question of my own leadership: because I was here, whose possibilities became bigger?โ

At ECIC, PR and Communications plays a strategic role in protecting, positioning and strengthening the organisationโs reputation, while ensuring that ECICโs mandate, impact and value to South African exporters and stakeholders are clearly understood. As part of our series this Womenโs Month, we asked ECIC PR & Communications Specialist, Dheshree Nelson, who has been with the Corporation since 2015, what Womenโs Month 2026 means to her.
โThis Womenโs Month, I celebrate the courage of women who use their voices, challenge the status quo and create space for others to rise. As women, we have the power not only to shape our own journeys, but to influence organisations, communities and the future we want to see. May we lead with purpose, support one another and never underestimate the impact of our voice.โ
As we celebrate 25 years of ECIC, we also celebrate the women whose expertise, leadership, commitment and voices continue to contribute to our journey and our impact.

Nelson Mandela famously said: โIf you want to change the world, help the womenโ. This Womenโs Month, we are proud to put some of the incredible young women of ECIC in the spotlight. What makes me proud to work at ECIC is seeing how our work translates into tangible economic impact. ECICโs latest Integrated Report estimates that its insured export transactions helped generate or sustain more than 41,000 job opportunities in South Africa over the past ten years, while contributing approximately R9.53 billion to GDP. Those figures make it clear that our work extends beyond policies, transactions and internal processesโit supports businesses, livelihoods and South Africaโs competitiveness.

I hope to leave a legacy of meaningful improvement. I would like the processes, relationships and capabilities I influence to be stronger because I was involved. I also want to be remembered as someone who acted with integrity, shared knowledge and helped colleagues succeed. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to an ECIC that is increasingly trusted, responsive and equipped to fulfil its mandate for many years to come.
