Why should lawyers enjoy professional autonomy, but not workers? @ABAesq's ban on noncompetes for lawyers cites lawyers' "professional autonomy" in its comments BEFORE "freedom of clients to choose a lawyer," which wasn't part of the initial justification. americanbar.org/groups/profe…

You can escape your noncompete by moving to California.
California non-compete law has just been shaken-up—and the ripples are likely to travel across the country. This blog looks at Senate Bill 699: ow.ly/XjgS50PSuU2
The @FTC's order would prohibit Surescripts from enforcing non-compete agreements with current and former employees.
Why would corp execs and CEO's oppose a noncompete ban they'd personally benefit from? Force of habit? Deferring to corp attys?

1/ Why do corp execs oppose a noncompete ban that could increase their own earnings? Do they listen only to their corp's lawyers or GC, who are exempt from noncompetes under @ABAesq rules?

"In just two years, the economy undid about a quarter of the increase in inequality since 1980. Much of that progress ... came from workers’ increased ability — and willingness — to change jobs."
Ban noncompetes so more employees can change jobs! @FTC

Lawyers, who exempted themselves from noncompetes under @ABAesq rules, see pay jumps when switching firms. All NY workers may be free to change jobs soon too if @GovKathyHochul signs NY's bill banning noncompetes.

Replying to @NLRBGC
Non-competes are unlawful because they chill employees from exercising their Section 7 rights which protects employees’ rights to take collective action to improve their working conditions.

ALT White text over a gradient blue background reads, "Non-competes, which cut off workers' employment opportunities, interfere with workers' ability to exercise their labor rights. For example, when workers are restricted by a non-compete: a) they know that they'll have greater difficulty replacing lost income if discharged for exercising their rights to organize and act together to improve their working conditions; b) bargaining power is undermined in the context of lockouts, strikes, and other labor disputes; and c) social ties and solidarity leading to improvements in working conditions are lost as workers scatter to the four winds."
.@FTC to vote next April on noncompete restrictions
NEW scooplet: The FTC is expected to vote next April on the final version of its noncompete ban, according to a person familiar.
The agency had spent a bit more than $500,000 on the effort by late February, according to docs I got through FOIA.

There are likely several reasons, but the one that sticks out is their fear of the growing bipartisan consensus on the need for robust antitrust enforcement. 2/8

Will New York be next to ban noncompetes after Minnesota?
Thank you to @NYSenatorRamos and all our witnesses who testified at today's joint hearing to discuss my bill to ban non-compete agreements.
These agreements are bad for workers, businesses, and New York's economy. Great to see this bill moving forward.
